Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation surrounding Hannah Kobayashi’s mysterious disappearance.

Just six days after officials labeled the Hawaii native’s missed flight connection to New York City as “intentional,” the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced they had obtained video evidence showing the 30-year-old crossing into Mexico. This revelation has led investigators to categorize Hannah as a “voluntary missing person.”

“At 12:13 p.m. on November 12, she was captured on video walking through the tunnel that connects to Mexico,” stated chief of detectives Alan Hamilton during a press conference on December 2. “She successfully passed through the San Ysidro port of entry, utilizing the tunnel that directs travelers into Mexico.”

Regarding the circumstances of how Kobayashi—who was last in contact on November 11, three days after missing her flight on November 8 from Los Angeles International Airport to New York City—managed to arrive at the southern border, special enforcement officer Douglas Oldfield indicated that video footage verifies she used public transit for her journey.

“She made her way through the MTA,” Oldfield explained during the press briefing. “From there, she arrived at Union Station [in Los Angeles]. At Union Station, she presented her passport and cash to buy a ticket to the border and subsequently crossed into Mexico.”
