I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel Enters Production

The highly anticipated sequel to the iconic ’90s slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer is officially in production, with the talented Jennifer Kaytin Robinson at the helm as director. This exciting development promises to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise while retaining its chilling essence.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Fans of the chilling slasher genre can rejoice as a new sequel to the classic 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it HERE) and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one HERE) is currently in the works. Directed by the creative Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work in Do Revenge, the production team recently shared an exciting behind-the-scenes image on their official X account, signaling that filming has begun!

The newly revealed image features a clapperboard indicating the filming of scene 50B, which intriguingly includes a vintage computer monitor reminiscent of the ’90s, along with a hook that boasts a unique design, distinct from those seen in the previous installments. This nostalgic element hints at a blend of old and new that fans might find thrilling:

Under Robinson’s direction, the film is being shaped by a screenplay crafted by Leah McKendrick, known for her work on M.F.A., with additional rewrites contributed by Robinson and journalist Sam Lansky. In a previous interview with Collider, McKendrick shared that this new sequel will delve into significant themes surrounding “the complex nature of heroism and villainy, the dichotomy of right and wrong, and the haunting reminders of our past mistakes. With the rise of social media and the pervasive nature of fame, it begs the question: who is Julie James in an era devoid of secrets?“ Additionally, she mentioned that during her pitch to Sony, they were particularly interested in exploring “the pivotal incident that sets the story in motion and the identity of the killer.

The gripping plot centers around four friends who, a year after a tragic accident where they accidentally kill a fisherman and dispose of his body, begin to receive ominous letters that suggest their crime has been witnessed. As they confront their past, the tension escalates when Barry, played by Ryan Phillippe, falls victim to a mysterious assailant wielding a meat hook, leading to a blood-soaked chase that puts Julie, Helen, and Ray in grave danger.

In the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, directed by Danny Cannon, the story continues a year after Julie James has survived a vicious encounter with a vengeful killer. Still haunted by the traumatic experience, she joins her friends on a vacation to the Bahamas, only to find herself receiving threatening messages that suggest the nightmare is far from over, as the specter of her past looms large.
