Alcoholics Anonymous Lessons Help Peter Frampton Keep Playing
Peter Frampton has openly shared that he is drawing upon the invaluable lessons he learned at Alcoholics Anonymous to continue his passion for playing the guitar amidst his ongoing health challenges. Since announcing his diagnosis with the muscle-wasting disease known as IBM in 2019, Frampton has been determined to keep his musical career alive. Recently, he confirmed his 2025 tour dates, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his craft, even though he faces increasing difficulties in managing his condition.
During a recent appearance at the NAMM trade event, Frampton candidly expressed, “It’s getting more difficult, I have to admit,” while relying on a walking cane for stability. This statement underscores the significant impact that his health issues have on his life and performances, yet his dedication to music remains steadfast.

Frampton elaborated, “The worst part about playing for me is when I’m soloing; I have to consciously think about what I’m playing. I prefer to let the music flow naturally from my heart, as it always has. I don’t want to think—I want to feel the music.” He continued to explain the challenges he faces during performances, stating that he often finds himself in the middle of a passage when he realizes, “That finger is not going to get there in time!” This realization has led him to adapt his technique, using one finger to play multiple notes instead of the three fingers he used in the past.
Embracing Resilience: How Peter Frampton is Innovating His Guitar Technique
Frampton drew inspiration from the legendary jazz musician Django Reinhardt, who, after losing two fingers in a fire in 1928, was forced to develop a unique playing style. “That’s what I’m doing,” Frampton remarked, emphasizing his passion for music in the face of adversity. “It may sound strange; you’re losing the ability to play… but I’m actively working on—and enjoying—the challenge of discovering a new way to express myself musically.”
He addressed concerns about his emotional state, stating, “People ask, ‘Aren’t you depressed?’ The truth is, you have to accept the things you cannot change. I learned that in AA and many other experiences. Thankfully, what I’m dealing with is not life-threatening, but it certainly is life-changing, and I choose to go with the flow.”
Frampton also shared exciting news about his upcoming musical projects, revealing that he is in the process of working on a new album, which he hopes to release this year. This album will follow his 2021 covers project, Frampton Forgets the Words. He humorously mentioned, “I keep saying, ‘Oh, that’s the last one; that’s the last one.’ But then I find myself asking, ‘Can we do it again?’ So we’ll call this one Let’s Do It Again.”
