The rapper’s opening track features a striking lyric, “Don’t let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that’s law,” which has sparked considerable dialogue within the entertainment landscape.
In a bold and somewhat provocative move, comedian Gary Owen took to Instagram, sharing the lyrics with a caption that declared, “If that’s the law that makes me a criminal.” This statement has raised eyebrows, particularly given that Owen’s career has thrived largely due to support from the Black community. His response seems to reflect a misunderstanding of the cultural sensitivities surrounding the discussion.
Meanwhile, Andrew Schulz, known for his controversial remarks, also chimed in. In a conversation with fellow commentator Akademiks, Schulz reacted to Kendrick’s lyrics, questioning whether the rapper was “too woke to understand a joke.” This comment has added fuel to an already heated debate about the responsibility of comedians when addressing sensitive topics, particularly those involving race and gender.
Schulz has previously faced backlash for his remarks about Black women, especially after his appearance on the ShxtsNGigs podcast. During that episode, he made some disparaging comments regarding a TikTok trend related to the so-called “Black girlfriend effect,” which suggests that men who date Black women experience significant personal growth. His comments sparked outrage, as he trivialized the emotional struggles faced by Black women and perpetuated harmful stereotypes.
He infamously stated, “They shave their hair because they start losing it from being so stressed, being around this Black girl that’s complaining about st all the fking time.” This insensitive remark exemplified a lack of awareness, and it was met with a swift backlash on social media platforms.
In light of the controversy, Dawodu and Duncan, the podcast hosts who initially laughed along with Schulz, later issued an apology for their reactions, acknowledging that they should have held him accountable for his words. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for sensitivity and awareness in discussions involving race, gender, and the experiences of marginalized communities.
