Behind the Scenes at the 2025 Golden Globes: Celeb Encounters
Mike Rinder — a prominent former executive of Scientology who became a vocal critic of the organization — has sadly passed away, as confirmed by an emotional post from his wife on Instagram.
Christie King Collbran shared the heartbreaking news on Sunday, expressing her profound sadness and pain at his loss. She emphasized that despite the grief, Mike’s extraordinary bravery and unwavering integrity will continue to inspire countless individuals for many years ahead.
Collbran reflected on how Rinder was a steadfast presence in the lives of everyone who had the privilege to know him. She poignantly added that “the world will remember you,” highlighting his lasting impact on those around him.
While Christie did not disclose the specific cause of death, it’s worth noting that last year, Rinder publicly announced his battle with esophageal cancer, a serious condition that often has significant health implications.
Within her heartfelt post, Christie included a message from Mike that he shared with her shortly before his passing. Part of the message reads, “I’ve been fortunate — living two lives in one lifetime. The second being the most wonderful years anyone could wish for with all of you and my new family!”
He further expressed, “My only real regret is not having accomplished what I said I wanted to — ending the abuses of Scientology, particularly the practice of disconnection, and witnessing [my son] Jack grow into adulthood. If you are in any way fighting to end these abuses, please keep the flag flying — never surrender.”
For those unfamiliar, Rinder was raised within the Scientology faith in Australia. After completing high school, he made the significant commitment of signing a “billion-year” contract with the organization, which allowed him to become part of its inner circle.
Rinder held the position of the global spokesperson and led the Office of Special Affairs for Scientology. However, he began to blow the whistle on the organization’s alleged abuses starting in 2007, raising awareness among the public about the inner workings and controversies surrounding the church.
He authored the book “A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology,” in which he detailed how the church became increasingly concerned about Tom Cruise‘s loyalty during his marriage to Nicole Kidman, illustrating the church’s internal dynamics and the pressures faced by high-profile members.
Later, Rinder co-hosted the Emmy-winning series “Scientology and the Aftermath,” which delved into the controversies surrounding Scientology and aired its first season in 2016. This series has contributed significantly to public discourse on the church and its practices.
On their official website, the Church of Scientology stated, “Mike Rinder is not a credible source regarding Scientology. He has not entered a Church in nearly a decade. The Church expelled him for malfeasance and has had no affiliation with him since.” This reflects the organization’s ongoing stance towards former members who criticize its practices.
We have reached out to the Church of Scientology for further comments regarding Rinder’s passing, but as of now, we have yet to receive a response.
