According to THR, Benny Safdie is officially joining Christopher Nolan for the cinematic adaptation of The Odyssey, a monumental retelling of Homer’s timeless ancient Greek epic poem. This adaptation is poised to captivate audiences with its grandeur and depth, showcasing Nolan’s unique storytelling abilities.

In Oppenheimer, Safdie portrayed the theoretical physicist Edward Teller, and in The Odyssey, he will be alongside an astonishing cast that features stars like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal. The film promises to blend top-tier talent with an exhilarating narrative that honors its source material.

The Odyssey narrates the epic journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home following the decade-long Trojan War. His voyage is fraught with danger, including harrowing encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchanting Sirens, and the formidable witch-goddess Circe. Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus face their own trials, contending with suitors vying for Penelope’s hand, each hoping to usurp control of the kingdom.

When Universal Pictures officially unveiled this project last year, they characterized it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” As production gears up to begin in late February, industry insiders speculate that this could potentially be Nolan’s most expensive venture, with an estimated budget of around $250 million, which could very well escalate further.

True to his reputation, Nolan is committed to authenticity and cinematic excellence, planning to film in diverse global locations that historically resonate with Odysseus’s legendary journey. Notably, a recent report highlights that part of the film will be shot on Favignana, known as Sicily’s “Goat Island,” a location thought to be the very site where Homer envisioned Odysseus and his crew barbecuing goats and replenishing their supplies. This picturesque island is part of the Egadi archipelago off Sicily’s northwest coast.

Benny Safdie is also set to make his solo directorial debut with The Smashing Machine, a biographical drama centered around the MMA fighter Mark Kerr, featuring notable performances by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. This film is slated for release by A24 later this year. Furthermore, fans can look forward to his appearance in Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel starring Adam Sandler, which is also set to premiere on Netflix later this year.

Mark your calendars, as The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience that honors the epic tale.
