Set years after a devastating fungal outbreak that has decimated much of the human population, The Last of Us follows the harrowing journey of Joel, who finds himself in a strict militarized quarantine zone. He shares a close bond with Tess, a resourceful survivor thriving in the black market of their community. Known for their ruthless reputation within the local criminal underworld, they embark on a perilous mission to retrieve their stolen firearms, only to encounter the leader of the Fireflies, a resistance group. This encounter leads them to a daunting task: smuggling a young girl named Ellie out of the zone, a mission that spirals into unforeseen challenges and revelations.
In the HBO adaptation, Pedro Pascal portrays Joel, a character grappling with deep-seated trauma and regret as he navigates a post-apocalyptic America. His primary objective is to protect Ellie, a girl who embodies the last flicker of hope for humanity in a world consumed by despair. Joining him is Bella Ramsey as Ellie, an orphan who has only known a ravaged Earth. Ellie battles her instincts for anger and defiance while yearning for connection and belonging, all while discovering that she might hold the key to humanity’s salvation. The cast also features Anna Torv as Tess, a hardened survivor; Gabriel Luna as Joel’s idealistic brother Tommy; Merle Dandridge as Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies; Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah; Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, a rebel; Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as survivalists Bill and Frank; and Storm Reid as Ellie’s best friend Riley.
New faces joining the cast for Season 2 include Jeffrey Wright from American Fiction as Isaac, a powerful leader of a militia group embroiled in a relentless war. Isabela Merced, known for her role in Alien: Romulus, will play Dina, Ellie’s romantic interest. Kaitlyn Dever, recognized from Booksmart and No One Will Save You, portrays Abby Anderson, a soldier whose quest for vengeance challenges her black-and-white worldview. Additional cast members include Danny Ramirez as Manny, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Young Mazino as Jesse, a selfless community member. The talented Catherine O’Hara from Schitt’s Creek also joins the cast in an undisclosed role. Merced has praised Dever, calling her one of the most gifted actors she has collaborated with.
