Matt Pinfield’s Recovery: Peers Share Support After Stroke
Renowned rock icon Matt Pinfield is currently on the road to recovery following a stroke he experienced earlier this month. His journey back to health is being closely followed by fans and peers alike, showcasing the profound impact he has had on the music industry.
Few figures in the music journalism world are as cherished and respected as Pinfield. He is primarily recognized for his influential role as the host of 120 Minutes on MTV, a platform that introduced countless new bands to eager audiences. Over his extensive career, Pinfield has also held significant positions within the industry, including an executive role at Columbia Records, where he played a pivotal role in promoting emerging artists such as Coheed and Cambria and Crossfade, among many others.
In his latest endeavors, Pinfield has taken on multiple roles, including co-hosting AXS TV’s The Power Hour, serving as the afternoon DJ on KCSN-FM, and hosting KLOS-FM’s KLOS New & Approved. Additionally, he is the creative force behind Flashback, a national radio program dedicated to celebrating the rich history of rock ‘n’ roll.
Over the years, Pinfield has developed a close friendship with the Loudwire team, engaging in meaningful discussions about various topics, such as the ongoing debate surrounding bands utilizing computers during live performances. He has also joined his Power Hour co-hosts on Loudwire Nights to curate playlists that highlight his favorite songs of the year, further showcasing his deep love for music.
In a heartfelt conversation with Lauryn Schaffner for Grunge: A Verbal History of the Music + Subculture, Pinfield expressed gratitude for the support he received from the grunge scene, noting how these artists placed their trust in him during his time at MTV. “I was very blessed that the people from the grunge scene, who didn’t trust a lot of people in media, liked and trusted me,” he reflected. “They knew that I really loved the music and that I cared about it.”
Tragically, on January 6th, Pinfield suffered a stroke in his beloved city of Los Angeles. This unexpected health crisis has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow musicians who recognize his contributions to the industry.
In the weeks following his stroke, Pinfield has been surrounded by family and loved ones, receiving the care he needs to stabilize and recuperate. Fortunately, updates indicate that he is resting comfortably, which brings hope to his many supporters.
As news of his condition spread in early January, numerous friends, colleagues, and musicians he has championed took to social media to share their well wishes for Pinfield. A report from TMZ on January 27th provided further insights into his situation, which has led to a surge of positivity directed toward him during this trying time.

This is my friend Matt Pinfield.
Matt is a legendary figure in the music industry, possessing an incredible wealth of knowledge about rock ‘n’ roll trivia, and he embodies the spirit of a truly wonderful human being.
Recently, Matt faced a severe stroke and has been hospitalized for several weeks.
I’m not seeking anything from you; I’m simply asking that you keep him in your thoughts.
He believed in me during my Marvelous 3 days back in the late 90s, and before we even met on the MTV set for his show 120 Minutes, I was an avid viewer. Listening to him was like hearing a walking encyclopedia of rock music as he spoke between videos.
Most importantly, he has an unparalleled passion for music. It flows through him and is evident in his enthusiasm and body language when discussing it. The joy he radiates when talking about any album is magnetic and beautiful.
I genuinely love Matt, and he is one of the few beacons in this industry who prioritizes the art of music over business transactions. I can’t say the same for many others. His dedication is to the music itself.
Keep him in your thoughts.
I love you, Matt. We will get through this together, and I believe you will bounce back stronger than ever.
