MCU Idea Scrapped by Deadpool & Wolverine Producer
Revelations from Deadpool & Wolverine’s Executive Producer Unveil Surprising Scrapped Concept Connecting Wade Wilson to the MCU
Prior to the highly anticipated release of Deadpool & Wolverine, which has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the year, various intriguing concepts were explored for the storyline. Among these was a captivating idea that would have unveiled how Wade Wilson was secretly a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) all along, yet audiences had never realized it until now. This perspective not only adds a layer of complexity to his character but also ties him seamlessly into the broader MCU narrative, enhancing the overall storytelling experience for fans of both Deadpool and the Marvel franchise.
“We had a ‘Deadpool’s Deleted Scenes Extravaganza’ where we were going to try and show that he was in the MCU the whole time – you just didn’t see his scenes, they were all on the cutting room floor,” shared executive producer Wendy Jacobson during her appearance on Assembled: The Making of Deadpool & Wolverine. She elaborated that the team was “really just trying to find a reason for this movie to be.” Although this concept would have been a delightful addition to the film, the narrative focus shifted dramatically once Hugh Jackman was officially brought on board to portray Wolverine, solidifying the film’s direction and purpose.
In addition to the aforementioned concept, Jacobson also mentioned an amusing idea for a shot-for-shot remake of Thor: The Dark World featuring Deadpool. While this notion may have sounded entertaining, it’s likely for the best that it did not come to fruition, as it could have diverted attention from the unique tone and style that Deadpool & Wolverine ultimately embraced.
Set six years after the previous installment, Deadpool & Wolverine follows Wade Wilson, portrayed by Reynolds, as he navigates civilian life, having put his days as the anti-hero Deadpool behind him. However, when an existential threat arises that endangers his homeworld, he is compelled to don his Deadpool persona once again and persuade a reluctant Wolverine, played by Jackman, to assist in saving their universe. The film’s ensemble cast is rounded out by talented actors including Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Rob Delany, Stefan Kapičić, and many more, contributing to a rich narrative tapestry.
Our reviewer Chris Bumbray shared his enthusiastic thoughts about Deadpool & Wolverine, describing it as a true crowd-pleaser that captures the essence of what fans have been craving. “Have you ever been to a concert and wished that your favourite band would stop playing their not-as-good new stuff and play the hits? That’s exactly what Marvel is doing with Deadpool & Wolverine,” Bumbray noted in his review. He further elaborated, “After a rough run of movies, with many saying their Phase 5 has been disastrous, this feels like an everything but the kitchen-sink attempt by the company to win back those fans who feel alienated by the new direction the company seemed to be heading in. With this, you have a rock ‘em, sock ‘em thrill ride that delivers fans exactly the movie they wanted to see, with nary a message to be found amidst all the charred, sliced and diced corpses our heroes leave in their wake. It’s glorious fun.” Fans can now enjoy the film on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray/DVD and it has just premiered on Disney+ for streaming.
