The FBI initiated an investigation into Harun Abdul-Malik Yener back in February after receiving a tip-off regarding his activities, particularly about him allegedly storing bomb-making schematics in an unsecured storage unit. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida, law enforcement uncovered various bomb-making materials, including electronic circuit boards and timers concealed within his storage unit. Further scrutiny of Yener’s online activity revealed numerous bomb-making searches on his Google account that dated back to 2017, as reported by PEOPLE.
In June, Yener engaged in discussions with undercover agents from the FBI, believing they were members of an anti-government militia. During these conversations, he allegedly conveyed his intentions to join their ranks and create an explosive device. Yener disclosed that his objective was to execute an attack on a business in New York City the week before Thanksgiving, which he believed would function as a much-needed “reboot” and “reset” for the United States government. Charging documents reviewed by the Associated Press indicate that Yener had set his sights on the New York City Stock Exchange as his target.
“The Stock Exchange, we want to hit that, because it will wake people up,” Yener allegedly told the undercover agents.
According to CBS News, Yener elaborated to the undercover agents about his plans to travel to New York to finalize the arrangements for the attack. He intended to disguise himself and deliver a recorded message to the media, explaining the rationale behind his planned bombing. Yener also reportedly described the potential devastation of the explosion, claiming it would be “like a small nuke going off,” suggesting that anything outside the targeted building would be destroyed and that there would be fatalities within.
