Discover the Young Talents Behind ‘Dune: Prophecy’
Recognizing the Stars: Where Have You Seen These Faces Before?
PERRI NEMIROFF: Being part of a Dune show is a remarkable milestone, and many of our viewers might be discovering your talents for the first time through this series. Can you each share a previous project that has helped you in your role on Dune: Prophecy, and also mention an acting first that you experienced while making this show?
JOSH HEUSTON: For me, Heartbreak High was a significant stepping stone, as it shares a theme of inner struggle. Both characters grapple with their backgrounds, and tapping into that emotional depth provided a solid foundation for my portrayal. Additionally, my first experience with sword fighting training was a highlight. Learning the intricate techniques and engaging in fight choreography was exhilarating, and I truly enjoyed every moment of it.
CHRIS MASON: I haven’t encountered a role quite like this before. My career has been diverse, but this character feels perfectly timed for me. While I often play antagonistic roles, I don’t perceive Keiran as a villain. An acting first for me was the opportunity to undergo intensive stunt training. Being able to immerse myself in this preparation was invaluable. Moreover, filming my first scenes with Emily Watson was a remarkable experience. The talent in our cast is astounding, and each day brings new challenges and learning opportunities.
SARAH-SOFIE BOUSSNINA: I also feel like I haven’t portrayed a character like Ynez before. Originating from Scandinavia, this project represents one of my first significant international opportunities. Collaborating with such esteemed individuals in the industry has been an incredible gift, and I cherish every moment of working alongside these talented actors.
It’s heartwarming to hear such enthusiasm!
Another intriguing question that I enjoy asking is about your favorite film of all time. What films resonate most with you personally?
MASON: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest stands out as my all-time favorite.
HEUSTON: That’s a fantastic choice!
I genuinely respect that!
BOUSSNINA: My favorite is Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton. I adore his unique style, and this film is one I could watch endlessly. It captivates me every time.
I’m right there with you on that!
HEUSTON: If I had to choose, I’d say the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it’s too challenging to pick just one film—I love them all!
The Real-Life Royal Family Inspirations Behind the Corrinos
Unveiling the Real-Life Inspirations Behind the Characters’ Backstories in Dune: Prophecy
As we delve deeper into your characters, I’m curious about the personal backstory work you’ve crafted. Can each of you share a specific detail you developed for your character that may not be explicitly showcased in the show but informed your performance significantly?
HEUSTON: We’ve discussed this a lot, but I drew inspiration from Prince Harry and Prince Hal, pondering their experiences of being in line for the throne while grappling with the pressures of familial expectations. This exploration of identity, coupled with examining the Indian class system, informed my understanding of Constantine’s character. His relationship with his father, Emperor Corrino, is complex, often leading him to shut down emotionally in critical moments. This dynamic creates a shift in his character when interacting with Ynez, showcasing different aspects of his personality.
BOUSSNINA: We had extensive discussions about the intricacies of our characters’ lives, particularly the trauma they endured at a young age, which undeniably shapes them as we meet them in the show. One poignant reference we explored was a scene with Harry and William after their mother’s passing, illustrating the necessity of maintaining a strong facade. Our characters often find themselves in formal situations where they must uphold their roles, masking their true feelings. They rely on each other for support, navigating a secluded and often lonely existence where trust is scarce.
HEUSTON: The facade they present is fascinating, often captured in micro-expressions seen even in modern media. Whether in a wedding scene or another significant moment, the characters attempt to conceal their emotions while simultaneously grappling with them publicly, adding depth to their portrayals.
MASON: For Keiran, it was vital for me to establish a clear distinction from the royal family’s status, as the Atreides family is still on their ascent. I focused heavily on voice and mannerisms, working closely with Alison [Schapker] to ensure he resonated with the common people and remained relatable, particularly in his interactions with the Fremen and others in the spice den. Understanding Keiran’s true desires and morals outside of his royal duties was crucial to crafting his character.
Princess Ynez’s Ambitions: What Is Her Ultimate Goal?
“Her Ambition: Bringing Power to the Corrino House.”
Sarah-Sofie, I want to revisit your character’s journey in Episode 1. Unlike many portrayals of princesses, Ynez doesn’t seem to be coerced into a specific role by her parents. What is her primary objective at the show’s outset, and does she believe achieving this will lead to her happiness?
BOUSSNINA: That’s an insightful question. Ynez’s foremost desire is to study at the Sisterhood, as she aspires to uphold her position with pride. Being the heir to the Golden Lion Throne, she dreams of becoming a ruler who leads on her own terms. Her ambition to study reflects her admiration for the powerful women of the Sisterhood, who embody the qualities she aspires to embody as a future leader.
Will achieving this ambition ultimately bring her happiness?
BOUSSNINA: Honestly, I think she is so focused on her ambitions that she doesn’t contemplate the implications of her happiness. She envisions herself as a different kind of ruler compared to her parents, which many can relate to. There’s a common thread of wanting to break away from parental paths. Her goal is to empower her house and elevate the Corrino family, believing she has the capability to make impactful changes. Kasha’s affirmation of her potential sparks a fire in Ynez; it inspires her to pursue her dreams with vigor and determination.
Unpacking Constantine Corrino: Beyond the Imperial Playboy Image
Josh, in Episode 1, a character suggests that Constantine is merely a man without purpose. Do you think this perception is simply an outsider’s view, or does he genuinely lack a sense of purpose?
HEUSTON: Constantine is on a quest for purpose. At the series’ outset, he’s navigating his identity and struggles to find his place. While he feels overshadowed by Ynez, he harbors ambitions and yearns for his father’s approval and respect within the Imperium. His reputation as a playboy complicates this journey, and he grapples with the desire to forge a meaningful path, even if he hasn’t fully discovered how to achieve that yet.
HEUSTON: I share that belief!
I’m not sure I can fully trust him, but I certainly believe in him.
MASON: Trust is a tricky thing.
HEUSTON: [Laughs] Absolutely!
BOUSSNINA: I’d like to add that for Ynez, the experiences from their childhood have instilled a strong desire for power and control, which fuels her ambition to study at the Sisterhood and become a formidable leader.
