Sequel Insights from Hobbs & Shaw Writer on Nolan’s Fandom
Screenwriter Chris Morgan has recently collaborated with Dwayne Johnson on the festive film Red One, but the future of the much-anticipated Hobbs & Shaw sequel remains uncertain. Morgan has been an integral part of the Fast & Furious franchise, beginning with the third installment, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and has penned scripts for each sequel, culminating with The Fate of the Furious. His partnership with Johnson continued as he crafted the screenplay for Hobbs & Shaw and is now involved in the exciting new project Red One. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Morgan shared insights regarding the franchise’s future and the potential for another Hobbs film, shedding light on what fans might expect.
After Dwayne Johnson‘s surprising cameo in Fast X, fans of the Fast & Furious franchise felt a renewed sense of hope as it appeared that he and Vin Diesel had reconciled their past differences, paving the way for Hobbs to rejoin the beloved family dynamic. There had been previous announcements about the development of another Hobbs film, which is expected to explore a storyline not directly involving Jason Statham‘s character, Shaw. This upcoming project was initially intended to serve as a lead-in to Fast 11. When The Hollywood Reporter inquired about the status of this project, Morgan provided insights into the ongoing discussions, indicating that while plans are being considered, the final decisions rest with the studio executives.
“That’s really something the studio would have to speak to. We’re talking about what comes when and how, but I’ll leave that to greater minds than mine.”
In addition to the ongoing conversations about the future of the franchise, Morgan also hinted at a potential project related to the Hobbs & Shaw universe. While he couldn’t reveal specific details, he expressed enthusiasm about working on a script that aligns with the spirit of the original film. The anticipation surrounding this new endeavor adds an intriguing layer to the discussions about the franchise’s expansion, leaving fans eager to see how these developments unfold.
“It’s under lock and key. I can say that I’m working on a Hobbs & Shaw kind of script. So we’ll see where that goes, but I’m excited about it.”
Another fascinating revelation from Morgan is the admiration expressed by acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, known for his groundbreaking work on films like Oppenheimer. Morgan was thrilled to learn that Nolan is a fan of the Fast & Furious series, particularly noting that Tokyo Drift is his favorite installment. Reflecting on this unexpected compliment, Morgan shared, “How could it not? He is literally one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of humanity, and he likes my movie. By the way, I’ve spoken to him about it since then.” This recognition has been especially gratifying for Morgan, particularly considering the mixed reviews Tokyo Drift received upon its release. He expressed his happiness that the film’s appreciation has grown over the years, stating, “When the movie came out, the reviews weren’t great; people didn’t like it. […] So, from where we started to now, you have no idea how good it feels to hear that everyone appreciates what we’ve always appreciated about it, which is Japan and drifting culture.”
