Spider-Man Star Praises His Beloved Series
Marvel is excited to unveil its latest animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which premieres its first two episodes tomorrow, January 29. This highly-anticipated show features the talented Hudson Thames, who is returning from What If…? Season 1 to reprise his iconic role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Thames has had a relatively low profile since making his Marvel debut a few years ago, with a brief appearance in a single episode of the popular CBS series Ghosts, streaming on Paramount+. However, he is now gearing up to don the Spider-Man suit once again in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Collider’s own Mike Thomas recently interviewed Thames, exploring the excitement of bringing a fresh perspective to Spider-Man in a universe that includes new characters such as Norman Osborn and Lonnie Lincoln—his insights may surprise you.
“I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”
The term “woke” often serves as a controversial label in discussions about representation in entertainment, frequently used to signal perceived biases in storytelling. This interview coincides with another enlightening conversation where Collider’s Mike Thomas spoke with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell. Trammell eloquently articulated his vision for depicting a vibrant new version of New York City, one that embraces and reflects the rich tapestry of cultures present in one of the world’s most diverse cities. Notably, Thames’ Oscar-nominated co-star Colman Domingo has faced racial backlash for his casting as Norman Osborn, a character who has traditionally been depicted as white in the comics.

Joining the talented Hudson Thames as Peter Parker and Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn, the series also welcomes Charlie Cox back to reprise his beloved role as Daredevil. However, it remains uncertain how many episodes he will participate in. Adding to the ensemble, Hugh Dancy, known for his work on Hannibal, will portray the brilliant but troubled Otto Octavius. The role of Aunt May will be voiced by the talented Rick and Morty actress Kari Wahlgren. Additionally, Eugene Byrd will bring life to Lonnie Lincoln, while Zeno Robinson takes on the role of Harry Osborn. Fans will also be thrilled to see Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his formidable role as Kingpin, adding depth to this already dynamic cast.
The excitement builds as the first two episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are set to premiere tomorrow, January 29.
