Steve Stevens Refuses Offer to Join David Lee Roth’s Band
Steve Stevens, renowned for his work with Billy Idol, recently shared the profound artistic, spiritual, and physical motivations behind his decision to decline an opportunity to join David Lee Roth’s solo band after Roth’s departure from Van Halen in 1985. This insight reveals the complexities of navigating professional relationships and personal integrity in the music industry.
Stevens had formed a meaningful friendship with Eddie Van Halen, which factored significantly into his choice to step back from Roth’s project. This bond underscored a commitment to loyalty and respect within the rock community, showcasing the deeper connections that often influence career decisions.
In a captivating interview with Guitar World, Stevens elaborated on the various elements that contributed to his reluctance, emphasizing the challenges of stepping into such a high-profile role. He articulated a strong sense of reverence for Van Halen’s legendary guitar tone and the iconic sound that defined an era in rock history.

“Ed’s tone…I always looked at it as sacred ground,” Stevens expressed. “While I can appreciate other guitarists, I’ve never been one to imitate. When I was initially approached to join David Lee Roth’s band, I feared becoming merely ‘Eddie part two,’ which was not my aspiration,” he explained. His perspective illustrates a commitment to individuality and authenticity as an artist.
He also commended Steve Vai, who ultimately accepted the position, stating, “I believe [he] possesses the strength of personality and stylistic flair to make the role his own. However, I worried about the creative constraints of hearing Dave’s voice paired with Ed’s distinctive tone.” This sentiment highlights the importance of creative freedom in making artistic choices.
When asked about any possible regrets regarding his decision to turn down Roth’s offer, Stevens replied: “Not really – by the time I met Dave, I had already formed a bond with Eddie and enjoyed that friendship. I just thought, ‘I’m not the right fit,’ and I was also committed to staying with Billy.” His dedication as a band member reflects a deep understanding of musical collaboration.
“I was approached during the completion of Billy’s third album, Whiplash Smile, and I pride myself on being a loyal band guy. Therefore, I felt it just wasn’t the right path for me,” he added. “Plus, I’m too short – those guys are all tall!” This light-hearted comment adds a personal touch, illustrating the human side of industry decisions.
Exciting News: Billy Idol’s Upcoming Album Embraces His Punk Roots
Stevens also confirmed that Idol is in the process of creating his first new album since 2014, with a tentative release expected in the near future. This project promises a refreshing return to the raw and energetic punk rock sound that defined Idol’s early career.
“In many ways, this album marks a revival of the aggressive punk rock style,” the guitarist revealed. “No one embodies the essence of late ’70s and early ’80s punk quite like Billy Idol. With numerous bands drawing inspiration from that golden era, we aim to reclaim that legacy,” he explained, emphasizing the cultural significance of this musical direction.
While acknowledging that the album will include “some incredible heartfelt ballads,” he mentioned, “there’s a plethora of experimental guitar sounds featured throughout. We’ve intentionally minimized the use of keyboards, aiming to replicate the approach taken with Rebel Yell, focusing on crafting a sonic landscape that originates from the guitar. We’re genuinely excited about this project,” he stated, conveying enthusiasm for the album’s direction.
