Tyka Nelson, Prince’s Sister, Passes Away at 64
Tyka Nelson, who was the only full sister of the legendary musician Prince, passed away at the age of 64 on Monday. This heartbreaking news was confirmed by her son, President Nelson. While he refrained from providing further details regarding her passing, other family members corroborated the announcement, marking a significant loss for both her family and fans worldwide.
Throughout her career, Tyka released four albums between 1988 and 2011 and had recently announced her retirement from music in June. She was set to perform at a farewell concert later that month, but unfortunately, she could not attend due to an unidentified illness that affected her health.

Tyka shared both parents, John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw Nelson, with Prince, who also had five half-siblings. Following Prince’s untimely death in 2016, Tyka became embroiled in the extensive legal battles surrounding his estate, which he left without a will, complicating matters for all family members involved.
In June, Tyka expressed that she had begun writing a memoir detailing her life and family experiences. In an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, she shared her thoughts, stating, “I really wasn’t a singer. I’m a writer. I just happen to be able to sing. I enjoy singing,” highlighting her identity beyond just being a performer.
Insights from Tyka Nelson on Prince’s Health and Family Dynamics
Tyka also revealed that she was in regular contact with Prince up until his passing, though he had been quite evasive regarding his health status. She recounted, “He kept avoiding questions,” expressing her frustration, “I kept getting mad.” This response illustrates the complex nature of their relationship during a challenging time.
She further elaborated on their conversations, saying, “I felt like, ‘Talk to me for two seconds.’ He’d change the subject, make a joke, and then we’d both laugh. He asked me if I could find more information about our family… [he] wanted me to find Sharon’s number. I didn’t question it. It was like, ‘Send this picture to that person.’ ‘OK. What for?’” These exchanges reveal the deep familial bond they shared, even amidst the unresolved issues surrounding his health.
Tyka continued, “A couple of times I said, ‘How are you really?’ He didn’t go into anything with me. That was bothering me, and he knew it; but that was all he wanted to tell me.” This poignant reflection hints that she plans to delve deeper into their conversations and family dynamics in her upcoming memoir.
