Why Sammy Hagar Changed Drummers: The Inside Story
Next year, legendary rock icon Sammy Hagar will launch his highly anticipated ‘Best of All Worlds’ tour in a special residency in Las Vegas. Joining him on stage will be renowned musicians Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani, alongside the exciting new addition, drummer Kenny Aronoff. This lineup promises an unforgettable experience filled with musical brilliance and high-energy performances.
Kenny Aronoff stepped into the spotlight earlier this year when drummer Jason Bonham had to leave due to a family emergency. What was initially intended as a temporary arrangement has now evolved into a permanent role, allowing Aronoff to shine in this iconic group for the foreseeable future.
“There are two key reasons for this decision,” Hagar recently shared with Rolling Stone. “Firstly, he is undeniably one of the greatest drummers in the world. His impressive track record includes being featured on more million-selling records than any other musician globally. He performed exceptionally well during this tour and has a longstanding collaboration with Joe…”
“Secondly, he absolutely amazed me. I had the pleasure of playing alongside Kenny in Chickenfoot, and he blew my mind then as well. During our audition, he quickly learned every song we presented. He asked, ‘What songs are we playing?’ and upon receiving the list, he meticulously charted them out. He has an incredible ability to read music and play with profound soul and power, perfectly nailing it on the first attempt. If that doesn’t leave a musician in awe, I don’t know what would, especially with the complexity of these songs. These tracks feature intricate arrangements reminiscent of Van Halen.”
Experience a Unique Las Vegas Residency with Sammy Hagar
Despite sharing the same title, Hagar assures fans that the ‘Best of All Worlds’ residency will offer a distinct experience from the traditional tour. Staying in one location allows the band more flexibility to incorporate a wider variety of songs into their setlist.
“It’s quite challenging when you’re touring, as you often lack the time to rehearse,” Hagar explained. “Once you arrive at your hotel, you might feel exhausted and not want to put in the effort to practice. However, with the residency setup, we perform every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday each week, with Thursdays off. The venue is dark on Thursdays, allowing us to come in and refresh the setlist with new songs.”

Much like the tour, attendees can look forward to a rich mix of Hagar’s solo hits, songs from Montrose, Chickenfoot, and, of course, a selection of classic Van Halen tracks. Hagar expressed, “The entire Van Halen catalog, particularly my contributions, feels like it’s in my hands now. No one else can deliver it with the authenticity we can; only a cover band could attempt to replicate it. Mikey and I feel a deep sense of ownership and responsibility to uphold the legacy of this music for our fans.”
