Wicked’s Omission from Song Awards: What Happened?
Despite its remarkable success in the 2025 Golden Globe nominations, Wicked missed out on two key categories that left fans surprised.
The highly anticipated film, which is an adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical, earned an impressive four nominations. However, it was notably absent from the nominations for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
This absence is primarily due to the fact that the film incorporated very little original music specifically composed for the screen adaptation. Instead, the score and songs are derived from the beloved 2003 musical, which features the enchanting music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, who also contributed to the film’s adaptation.
According to the eligibility criteria set forth by the Golden Globe Awards, for a score to qualify for nomination, it must consist of “primarily original music written specifically for the motion picture.” Furthermore, an original song must contain music and lyrics that are “original and written specifically for the motion picture.”
Nonetheless, Wicked still holds significant potential to win prestigious awards such as Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, and Cinematic & Box Office Achievement during the broadcast on January 5. Additionally, standout performances by its stars, Cynthia Erivo, nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and Ariana Grande, in contention for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, present further opportunities for accolades.
