Despite the buzz surrounding Will Smith’s recent post, sources informed The Hollywood Reporter that he will not be participating in Warner Bros. and director Drew Goddard’s anticipated The Matrix 5, which was officially announced to be in the works for early 2024. In the Instagram post, Smith shared a nostalgic reflection on how he declined the lead role of Neo in the original 1999 sci-fi masterpiece, which was masterfully directed by the Wachowski siblings, Lana and Lilly Wachowski. The video featured a Matrix-themed digital font on a stark black background, stating: “In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in ‘The Matrix.’ Smith turned it down,” narrated in the third person. “He opted for ‘Wild Wild West,’ believing it aligned better with his career at that time.
