2024 Deaths: Remembering Those We Lost

The year 2024 witnessed the passing of several legendary figures who left an indelible mark on music and culture, marking a significant loss for fans and the industry alike. Their contributions shaped the landscape of entertainment, and their legacies will continue to influence future generations. It is essential to remember their impact and celebrate their lives during this time of mourning.

Wayne Kramer, the iconic guitarist and co-founder of Detroit’s groundbreaking band MC5, succumbed to pancreatic cancer at 75, leaving behind a rich musical heritage. Similarly, Mary Weiss, the unforgettable lead singer of the Shangri-Las, also passed at 75, while Woodstock star Melanie, renowned for her poignant song “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” left us at the age of 76, reminding us of the magic of that historic festival.

The music world also mourned the loss of other significant artists, including Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, iconic singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson, blues legend John Mayall, and Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers Band. These artists not only contributed to their respective genres but also inspired countless musicians and fans worldwide.

Additionally, the community lost remarkable session musicians and touring artists, such as Aston “Family Man” Barrett of Bob Marley?s Wailers and Del Palmer, who was known for his longstanding collaboration with Kate Bush. Their artistry and talents enriched the musical experiences of many, and their absence will be felt throughout the industry.

On a more personal note, the rock community also faced profound losses. Bruce Springsteen’s mother, Adele, passed away at 98. Springsteen once remarked, “There ain’t a note that I play on stage that can?t be traced back to my mother,” highlighting her influence on his music. Furthermore, Brian Wilson’s wife and manager, Melinda, who played a crucial role in his musical resurgence after years of mental health struggles, also passed away. Wilson poignantly referred to her as ?my savior? on social media, underscoring the deep personal impact of her loss.
