Hale first candidly discussed her journey to sobriety in February 2023, revealing that she quietly celebrated one year alcohol-free. She expressed her desire to reach out to anyone who might be struggling, stating through Instagram, “While this journey has primarily been personal, I felt compelled to let those in need know that you are not alone and you are loved.”
The Truth or Dare star further explored her decision to pursue sobriety during an appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast in November 2023. She revealed, “I didn’t realize I had a problem until my early 20s,” a period when she became aware of her frequent thoughts about drinking and her discomfort in social situations without alcohol.
“I attended rehab when I was 23,” Hale disclosed. “I don’t think anyone on the show [PLL] knew about it. It was my choice, and I kept it private.”
“That was a pivotal moment in my life,” she reflected, adding, “But I wasn’t ready to give up drinking, which is why I didn’t achieve sobriety until I was 32.”
Hale mentioned that she explored various options, including outpatient and inpatient rehab, before finally embracing sobriety in her 30s. She credited the COVID-19 pandemic for inspiring her to make the life-altering decision to commit to sobriety wholeheartedly.

“Without the challenges posed by COVID, I may not have committed to sobriety,” Hale shared, highlighting how the pandemic served as a catalyst for her life-changing decision.
The Hating Game actress celebrated two years of sobriety last January, sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram that reflected on her journey.
Hale honored that moment with a reflection on the past year, discussing the “deeply personal” journey she had undertaken as she continued to abstain from alcohol.
“This continues to be the greatest gift I’ve given myself. I remain incredibly grateful for another year of growth, growing pains, lessons learned, joys, and self-realizations. Being able to show up as my true self and receiving such warmth and acceptance is something I never take for granted,” Hale expressed in her post.
