Despite not releasing a studio album since the pandemic-era instrumental projects Ghost V: Together and Ghost VI: Locusts, Trent Reznor, the band’s frontman, has kept himself busy composing compelling soundtracks for various films. Recently, he and his frequent collaborator Atticus Ross achieved their third Golden Globe win for their exceptional score in the 2024 film Challengers, further solidifying their impact in the music and film industries.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024, Reznor expressed his feelings towards contemporary popular music, stating, ?Over the last 10 years or so, I?ve been a bit disillusioned by popular music. As I get older, some things feel less relatable to me. The business sucks. The way people consume music is not as inspiring as it used to be; it?s marginalized in a lot of ways. Scoring has provided a way for me to feel vital, to feel challenged.?
Reznor?s revitalized passion for music is being funneled back into Nine Inch Nails, as the group is set to contribute to the score for the upcoming film Tron: Ares, scheduled for release on October 10. ?We?re taking the inspiration we?ve garnered and funneling it into a Nine Inch Nails project, which we?re working on now,? Reznor notes. ?We?re ready to be back in the driver?s seat,? indicating a thrilling new chapter for the band.
