Sony Pictures has officially revealed an exciting new poster for 28 Years Later, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the iconic 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and featuring a screenplay by Alex Garland.

The visionary duo of 28 Days Later, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, have reunited to craft a thrilling sequel to their groundbreaking zombie film. As reported earlier this year, this sequel, entitled 28 Years Later, is set at Sony and is designed to kick off a new trilogy following the original film. While the saying goes that time heals all wounds, the newly unveiled poster for 28 Years Later suggests otherwise, indicating that the struggles faced by humanity continue unabated. The star-studded cast of 28 Years Later features notable actors like Jodie Comer from The Bikeriders, Aaron Taylor-Johnson from The Fall Guy, Ralph Fiennes from Conclave, and Erin Kellyman from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Additionally, it has been hinted that Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original film, will make a return in a compelling and unexpected role.

In the original 28 Days Later, Murphy portrayed Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover a desolate and apocalyptic England overrun by individuals infected by a devastating rage virus. Boyle and Garland explored various endings for 28 Days Later before arriving at the one that audiences ultimately witnessed in theaters, which was the only version where Jim survives. Thus, he remains alive and poised to endure another terrifying ordeal with the rage virus, 28 years later. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the 2002 film achieved remarkable success, grossing $82.7 million worldwide and leading to the sequel 28 Weeks Later, in which Boyle and Garland’s involvement was limited to executive producers.

In addition to directing the first sequel, Garland is also responsible for writing the screenplay for the project that follows 28 Years Later. Among the two 28 Years Later films currently in development, Boyle has chosen to direct only the first one, while Nia DaCosta, known for her work on Candyman and The Marvels, has taken over for the second film, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, which has already completed production.

During an interview with IndieWire, Ralph Fiennes shared insights about the plot of 28 Years Later: “Britain is enduring a 28-year-long nightmare due to this horrific plague of infected individuals who have turned violent and rabid, yet there are still a few uninfected communities. The story focuses on a young boy who embarks on a quest to locate a doctor to aid his ailing mother. He guides her through the stunning landscapes of northern England, all while navigating the lurking dangers of the infected that hide in the forests and hills. However, he eventually encounters a doctor who initially appears peculiar but ultimately proves to be a beacon of hope.“

Thanks to a lucrative deal with Sony, each of these upcoming films will enjoy a theatrical release, with production budgets estimated around $60 million. Specifically, 28 Years Later is allocated a budget of $75 million, indicating the studio’s commitment to delivering a high-quality cinematic experience.

Both Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are producing 28 Years Later alongside Bernie Bellew, original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was instrumental at Fox Searchlight Pictures during the original film’s production. Furthermore, Cillian Murphy will take on the role of executive producer. The film is slated for theatrical release on June 20th, 2025.
