We critique the elevated, arthouse horror flick, In A Violent Nature.

PLOT: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his physique is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.

Critique: I’ve been waiting my complete life for somebody to come along and make “POV Jason Voorhees.” The idea of following a slasher villain as they go on their journey of mayhem is the stuff of dreams. I’ve often felt that slashers are the prime candidate to deconstruct in an fascinating way. Not because Scream has the subgenre been offered a distinctive point of view and had hype behind it. So, like the 1996 classic, I was hoping this would develop off of the films that came prior to it, and bring slasher films to new heights. Instead of a appreciate letter, In A Violent Nature feels like an insult to the genre.

There are clear comparisons with Friday the 13th, with the Johnny character paralleling Jason Voorhees in several strategies. However, Johnny lacks any type of character that can let the audience to attach themselves. He’s just a killer husk.
