Los Angeles County District Attorney Shares Major Announcement About The Case Of The Menendez Brothers
According to CNN, on Thursday, October 3, George Gascón, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, revealed that prosecutors are reviewing new proof within the Menendez brother’s case. The outlet reviews that prosecutors have obtained a letter beforehand written by Erik that “corroborates the allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.”
“I’ve been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I can’t explain it… I never know when it’s going to happen, and it’s driving me crazy. Every night I stay up thinking he might come in. I need to put it out of my mind,” the letter, reportedly addressed to Erik’s cousin, reads, per Fox 35 Orlando.
Attorneys for Erik and Lyle Menendez have reportedly requested the court docket to vacate the brothers’ 1996 conviction for the 1989 homicide of their mother and father, Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez. Despite this, the outlet reviews that Gascón maintains the brothers dedicated the homicide. “The killings are not excusable. I want to make that clear. Nor is their behavior before, during or after the crime. But we should not deny who they are today in their 50s,” she wrote. “…I don’t believe that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was the right punishment for this complex case. Had this crime been committed and trialed today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different… With their case back in the spotlight — and considering the revelation of a 1988 letter from Erik to his cousin describing the abuse — my hope is that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s life sentences are reconsidered.”
