As I Lay Dying’s Comeback: A Controversial Timeline

Over the past decade, the journey of As I Lay Dying has been marked by significant events, controversies, and a complex narrative about their comeback and decline. To better understand this journey, we have created a comprehensive timeline that encapsulates the remarkable highs and lows of the band, including their classic lineup and the ensuing turmoil that followed.

The band was birthed in 2000 in San Diego, California, when vocalist Tim Lambesis teamed up with drummer Jordan Mancino. After experiencing several lineup changes, the group solidified its identity with the addition of guitarists Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso, along with bassist Clint Norris in 2003, creating the dynamic ensemble fans came to recognize.

In 2006, Josh Gilbert stepped in to replace Norris, and this lineup thrived until a shocking turn of events in 2013, when Lambesis was arrested and subsequently convicted in 2014, leading to a significant disruption for the band.

The conviction stemmed from a chilling incident where Lambesis attempted to engage a hitman to kill his estranged wife, Meggan. His actions resulted in a prison sentence of over two years. During his incarceration, the remaining members—Hipa, Sgrosso, Mancino, and Gilbert—formed a new band known as Wovenwar, exploring fresh musical avenues apart from the turmoil surrounding As I Lay Dying.

Approximately 18 months after his release from prison, As I Lay Dying made a triumphant return in 2018, reuniting with the same members who had been with him during his legal troubles. They embarked on a tour and unveiled a new album titled Shaped by Fire. However, despite the initial excitement, fractures began to appear in this lineup over the following years, signaling underlying issues.

By the close of 2022, only Lambesis and Sgrosso remained in the group, yet As I Lay Dying continued to push forward. They brought in new musicians, including bassist Ryan Neff, guitarist Ken Susi, and drummer Nick Pierce, to create fresh material together. However, by October 2024, these new members began departing one by one, each sharing vague explanations on social media about their decisions to leave.

Currently, Lambesis stands as the sole member of As I Lay Dying, with intentions to carry on the band’s legacy despite the tumultuous history.
