Discover the Gruesome Details of Shawn “Clown” Crahan’s Most Devastating Injury on Stage
During a candid Q&A session with Vulture, the renowned percussionist was prompted to share his most serious injury. We advise that the details might be unsettling for some readers.
“There are numerous injuries I could mention, but the one that truly incapacitated me was when I severely ripped my bicep in half while striking a keg with a bat,” Clown recounts. This incident highlights the unpredictable dangers of live performances.
“For those unaware, the anatomy of a bicep consists of two tendons, one on each side that stabilizes the muscle—similar to rubber bands anchored at the shoulder. I tore both of those tendons. Consequently, my bicep ended up on my forearm, with my skin drooping down alongside it.”
Crahan vividly recalls that the sight was horrifying enough to make some audience members nauseous. “People would vomit when they witnessed it,” he elaborates, emphasizing the severity of his injury.

The impact of this injury lingers with him even today. “I underwent surgery, which resulted in the loss of 25 percent of that arm. Sometimes I reach for something on the top shelf of the fridge, believing I have a grip on it, only for it to slip and fall. It’s painful,” he admits. “I also experience swelling on my right side where a dissolvable screw was placed. Among all my injuries, this one serves as a constant reminder every single day.”
