Spinal Tap 2 Director Reveals Band’s Latest Adventures
Director Rob Reiner Offers Insights into the Lives of the Iconic Rockers in Spinal Tap 2
It’s been a remarkable forty years since the groundbreaking release of This Is Spinal Tap, and fans are eager to discover what the legendary rock band has been up to during this time. All will be revealed in the upcoming film Spinal Tap 2. In a recent conversation with Empire, director Rob Reiner shared intriguing insights into the characters’ lives, focusing on Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). These updates promise to capture the essence of the beloved characters while introducing fresh elements that resonate with both new audiences and long-time fans.
“Nigel has been running a cheese and guitar shop,” Reiner revealed. “David has been writing music for a true-crime podcast called ‘The Trouble With Murder’. And Derek is the curator of a museum of glue. He’s also written a symphony about the fact that the devil wears a bad hairpiece. It’s called ‘Hell Toupée’.” As the director returns to his role as filmmaker Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, he hinted at the addition of exciting new songs, including Derek Smalls’ catchy number, Rockin’ In the Urn, which humorously tackles the idea of performing even after death, emphasizing the band’s enduring legacy and connection to their audience.
While official plot details for Spinal Tap 2 remain largely under wraps, Reiner has provided fans with tantalizing snippets since the project was announced two years ago. “The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one?” Reiner said. “For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.“ This dedication to preserving the original’s spirit while exploring new narrative avenues is evident in Reiner’s vision for the sequel.
Reiner elaborated, “They haven’t spent any time together recently, and that became the premise. The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.“ This narrative device not only brings the characters back together but also sets the stage for a comedic exploration of their complicated relationships, ensuring that fans are treated to both humor and nostalgia.
The highly anticipated sequel, Spinal Tap 2, will also feature appearances from a star-studded lineup of real-life musicians, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, and many more. Although an official release date is yet to be confirmed, Reiner has estimated that fans can expect the film to debut in “late spring or early summer” of 2025, generating excitement and anticipation among music lovers and comedy fans alike.
