Earlier this year, the estate of Tom Petty delighted fans with an expanded edition of Long After Dark, now including 12 additional tracks that enrich the listening experience. This album, which is particularly celebrated for its Top 20 hit “You Got Lucky,” also marks the first appearance of Howie Epstein on bass, contributing to the band’s evolving sound during that era.
Despite its acclaim, Long After Dark wasn’t among Petty’s personal favorites. In an enlightening interview featured in 2005’s Conversations With Tom Petty, he reflected, “It wasn’t that I didn’t like it; it’s a solid rock and roll record with great songs and musicianship. However, I feel we may not have progressed as artists with that particular album.”
