Ne-Yo Discusses His Journey to Embracing Polyamory

On November 14, ‘The Lemon Drop Show’ aired an exclusive episode featuring an insightful interview with Ne-Yo on YouTube. Approximately 25 minutes into the episode, Ne-Yo shared that his decision to become polyamorous stemmed from a profound realization that he had been living a life that was not authentic to himself for what felt like an eternity. He articulated that recognizing this truth was a significant turning point in his life.

“…And I realized that everything is not for everybody,” he said. “…Society tells you that you’re supposed to be with one person. You get married, and y’all supposed to be together forever… I am not sg on marriage. I’m not sg on anyone who has figured out how to make that thing work for them. Again, everything’s not for everybody. Monogamy is for you. It’s not for me.”

Ne-Yo went on to express that this realization felt like a weight lifted off his shoulders, freeing him from the constraints of societal expectations.

“I realized I spent so much time lying and trying to be somebody I wasn’t for the sake of somebody else,” he continued. “[It was] complete and utter time wasted when I could’ve just been exactly who I am, said exactly what I want, exactly how I’m rocking, exactly how I’m not, and then waited for those people to gravitate to me because that’s my reality now… I don’t have to lie anymore, and I’ll be damned if I ever go back to that person that needed to lie for the appeasement of somebody else. I’m not that no more.”

In his reflections, Ne-Yo emphasized that living authentically has significantly improved all of his relationships, including the one he shares with his ex-wife, Crystal Renay. He noted that the evolution of their relationship has brought them to a point where they can genuinely call one another ‘friends’.

“We’re actually at the place where we can call each other ‘friend’ again because now it’s, ‘This is who I am. Love it or leave it alone,’” he said.

While Instagram user @thedezignher added, I wish he discovered this prior to the women who held him down, but glad he is living in his truth now and people know what it is. It’s too many people out here lying and ruining other people because of it.”
