Wolfs, sequel scrapped

Wolfs Sequel Development Stalled

Jon Watts, the director of Wolfs, shares insights into his decision to halt the development of the highly anticipated sequel with Apple. This announcement has left fans and industry insiders curious about the creative dynamics behind the scenes.

Wolfs, sequel scrapped

UPDATE: Contrary to popular belief, the cancellation of the Wolfs sequel was not initiated by Apple. Jon Watts clarified in a statement to Deadline that the decision to scrap the sequel was entirely his. He revealed that Apple intended to shift the film to a limited theatrical release for one week before its streaming launch, which ultimately influenced his choice. He expressed his shock upon learning of this change just days prior to the public announcement. Watts stated:

“I wasn’t even informed about the (shift to streaming) until less than a week before their public announcement. I was completely blindsided and requested that they refrain from including details about my involvement in writing a sequel. They proceeded to ignore my request and included it in their press release, seemingly to spin the narrative positively regarding their streaming pivot. Consequently, I quietly returned the funds allocated to the sequel. I wanted to avoid negative press as I took pride in the original film and cherished my collaboration with Brad, George, and the rest of the team. However, it’s essential to clarify that Apple did not cancel the Wolfs sequel; I made that decision due to a loss of trust in them as a creative partner.”

ORIGINAL POST: Wolfs, the action-comedy featuring A-list stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the most-watched movie in Apple TV+ history upon its debut. The streaming service had already initiated plans for a sequel, but now Wolfs writer and director Jon Watts is expressing uncertainty about its future. This unexpected twist has left fans pondering the potential for another installment.

During an interview with Collider, Watts shared, “I’m uncertain about my next directorial project, and I don’t foresee a Wolfs sequel being produced.” Given the film’s significant success, the news of a stalled sequel is surprising, particularly considering that audience reactions were mixed. The film marked the first on-screen reunion of Clooney and Pitt since their collaboration in Burn After Reading. Clooney portrays a skilled fixer tasked with concealing a high-profile crime, but when another fixer (played by Pitt) enters the scene, the duo of “lone wolves” must team up, leading to an unpredictable and chaotic night. Originally slated for a broader theatrical release, the distribution strategy was later adjusted to a limited release, emphasizing its premiere on Apple TV+ instead.

Matt Dentler, Apple Original Films’ head of features, lauded Wolfs following its release. “When George, Brad, and Jon presented the concept for Wolfs, it was an effortless decision — a captivating film featuring two Oscar-winning actors known for their iconic chemistry.” Dentler commented. “The overwhelming audience response has turned Wolfs into a global phenomenon. We consistently view Apple TV+ as a platform for the world’s most talented creators to showcase their best work, and witnessing such widespread audience engagement is incredibly exciting.

Chris Bumbray, our own film critic, praised the movie, noting that while its premise may not be groundbreaking, the on-screen chemistry between Clooney and Pitt significantly contributed to its success. “Both actors excel in their roles, renowned for their portrayals of cool and composed characters infused with humor. This dynamic served them well in the Ocean’s Trilogy, and Wolfs shares a similar tone, albeit with a darker edge. Like those films, it is a crime caper, but Watts capitalizes on the R-rating for more mature themes, including strong language and violence.” Bumbray elaborated. “This film showcases the duo enjoying themselves, and within a contained environment, it serves as an excellent hangout flick. Watching Clooney and Pitt together has always been entertaining, and Wolfs stands out as their finest collaboration since the original Ocean’s Eleven.” To read the full review, click here.
