Jon Watts clarified in a statement to Deadline that the decision to scrap the sequel was entirely his. He revealed that Apple intended to shift the film to a limited theatrical release for one week before its streaming launch, which ultimately influenced his choice. He expressed his shock upon learning of this change just days prior to the public announcement. Watts stated:

“I wasn’t even informed about the (shift to streaming) until less than a week before their public announcement. I was completely blindsided and requested that they refrain from including details about my involvement in writing a sequel. They proceeded to ignore my request and included it in their press release, seemingly to spin the narrative positively regarding their streaming pivot. Consequently, I quietly returned the funds allocated to the sequel. I wanted to avoid negative press as I took pride in the original film and cherished my collaboration with Brad, George, and the rest of the team. However, it’s essential to clarify that Apple did not cancel the Wolfs sequel; I made that decision due to a loss of trust in them as a creative partner.”
