Nicko McBrain Announces Retirement from Iron Maiden Touring

Legendary drummer Nicko McBrain is set to perform his final concert with Iron Maiden, marking the end of an iconic era for the band.

The beloved drummer, who faced significant health challenges after suffering a stroke in January 2023, made the heartfelt announcement via the band’s official website. He expressed both sadness and gratitude in his statement: “After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle. Today, Sat, Dec 7th, Sao Paulo will be my final gig with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success moving forward.” This announcement resonates deeply with fans who have followed his journey over the years.

McBrain’s journey with Iron Maiden began in 1982 when he first showcased his incredible drumming skills on the 1983 album Piece of Mind. Following his health scare, McBrain candidly shared his ongoing struggles with some of the band’s intricate tracks, stating, “I unfortunately haven’t been able to give you lot 100% of my performance.” His honesty about his health challenges highlights not only his dedication to the band but also the emotional connection he shares with the fans.

Reflecting on the changes made by his bandmates to support him, McBrain noted, “It ain’t the old Nicko – it’s not the old one by a long shot. But at least it’s part of me. And my band, bless their hearts, Steve Harris and the rest of the guys turn around and say, ‘If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song.’” This speaks volumes about the camaraderie and understanding within the band, emphasizing their commitment to one another as they navigate this transition.

I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!’” His words encapsulate a rich history filled with passion, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

Iron Maiden’s manager, Rod Smallwood, shared his sentiments on behalf of the entire band, expressing deep appreciation for McBrain’s contributions: “Thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years and my friend for even longer. I speak on behalf of all the band when I say we will miss you immensely! The band and I all have a thousand great memories of the past 42 years, great gigs, copious platinum and gold discs and awards, love from the fans and one beer too many on too many occasions! Such a bond is forever! And, as Steve Harris says, ‘Nicko is and will always be part of the Maiden family.’” This tribute underscores the profound impact that McBrain has had on the band’s legacy.

As tonight’s show signifies the end of Iron Maiden’s 2024 The Future Past tour, the band is eagerly preparing for their next chapter, with plans to hit the road again in May 2025 for the Run For Your Lives tour. In their announcement, they reassured fans that a replacement for McBrain has already been chosen: “Maiden always get their man and our already chosen new drummer will be announced very shortly.” This hints at the band’s intention to maintain their energy and legacy, even as they transition into a new era.
