Shaboozey’s ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ and ‘Good News’ Performance
Shaboozey electrified the audience with his massive hit during his highly anticipated Saturday Night Live debut on December 7. This performance marked a significant moment in his career, showcasing his rising stardom in the country music scene.
The 29-year-old country sensation took center stage as the musical guest for the episode hosted by Paul Mescal. He captivated viewers by performing his 19-week Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” alongside his heartfelt new ballad “Good News,” both of which reflect his unique storytelling ability and musical talent.
Introduced by Gladiator II star Paul Mescal, the Virginia native opened his set with “Good News,” his first new single since the release of his third studio album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going. This album achieved impressive success, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart back in May, solidifying his status as a major player in the music industry.
The song’s poignant lyrics — “I need some good news/ Sittin’ here, sippin’ on cold truth/ Nobody knows what I’m goin’ through/ Bet the devil wouldn’t walk in my shoes” — were beautifully complemented by gentle acoustic guitar melodies, a plaintive fiddle, and a rich array of pedal steel, creating an emotional atmosphere that resonates with listeners.
Later in the show, Shaboozey made a triumphant return to perform his undeniable hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” Adorned in a shiny brown jacket and matching pants, he delivered an electrifying performance set against a dimly lit, bar-like backdrop, surrounded by his talented backing band, enhancing the overall ambiance of the song.
The SNL appearance signifies yet another milestone in Shaboozey’s whirlwind year. Just last Thanksgiving, he took the stage at the halftime show of the Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears game at Ford Field, where he performed a medley including “Last of My Kind,” “Highway,” and “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” Adding to his accolades, he received five Grammy nominations a few weeks prior, including prestigious nods for best country song and song of the year.
As SNL celebrates its remarkable 50th anniversary season, which kicked off in September, it will culminate in a special live primetime event on February 16. In the upcoming week, Gracie Abrams is set to make her SNL debut during the episode hosted by Chris Rock, followed by the much-anticipated return of Hozier with Martin Short as host.
