Law enforcement officials have apprehended Kedus Yacob Damtew following allegations that he threatened flight attendants during a United Airlines flight. The 38-year-old individual, originally from Washington, D.C., was traveling from Houston to Newark, New Jersey when the incident occurred.

According to reports from PEOPLE, Kedus Yacob Damtew is accused of both threatening and physically assaulting members of the flight crew. The incident was confirmed by New Jersey Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, who stated that the alarming events unfolded in June while the aircraft was on its way to Newark Liberty International Airport.

During the altercation, Damtew allegedly removed his shirt, aggressively shoved his chest into a flight attendant, and pinned her against the emergency exit door. He reportedly issued threats, punched an aircraft oven, and threw water at the flight attendant while shouting. Several bystanders came to the aid of the United Airlines staff, helping to restrain Damtew with flex cuffs and escort him to the rear of the plane until it landed safely.

Understanding Damtew’s Legal Charges and Future Proceedings

Kedus Yacob Damtew is currently facing serious charges, including interference by assault or intimidation and making threats against flight attendants and crew members aboard a United Airlines flight. The Miami Herald highlights that if found guilty, Damtew could face up to 20 years in prison, alongside potential fines reaching as high as $250,000. Reports from PEOPLE indicate that Damtew made a court appearance in federal court in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, December 10, where he was released following the initial hearing.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger expressed gratitude towards the FBI agents for their diligent investigation that led to the charges against Damtew. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Port Authority Police Department, under the leadership of Edward T. Cetnar, for their valuable assistance in this case.

“The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” stated U.S. Attorney Sellinger, emphasizing the importance of due process.

As of now, United Airlines has not issued any public statements regarding the incident involving Kedus Yacob Damtew. Additionally, the flight attendant who was reportedly assaulted has not yet provided an official comment on the matter.
