Barbie 2 Development Denied by Studio Despite Early Reports
Barbie achieved an impressive b.4 billion in global box office sales, a remarkable figure that typically signals the green light for sequels in Hollywood. Although detailed information about a potential Barbie 2 has been scarce, a reliable insider recently informed The Hollywood Reporter that acclaimed filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have formulated a creative concept for the sequel. Another source with insider knowledge mentioned that this idea has been presented to Warner Bros. and is currently in the early developmental stages. However, the studio has publicly refuted these claims.
A representative from Warner Bros. stated, “THR’s reporting is inaccurate,” while a spokesperson for Gerwig and Baumbach added that “There is no legitimacy to this reporting.” This denial may stem from ongoing negotiations regarding the future of Barbie 2, and regardless of the current status, many believe that a sequel is inevitable. The creative minds behind the original blockbuster are committed to not rushing the sequel, ensuring it meets the high expectations set by the first film.
Margot Robbie, who plays the titular role, expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a follow-up when she was asked earlier this year. She noted, “It’s funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel.” Robbie continued, “I don’t think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn’t designed to be a trilogy.” Her comments reflect a broader industry trend where sequels and franchises are often prioritized over standalone stories, but she insists that the original film’s success did not automatically dictate a sequel.
Interestingly, Robbie was the one who initially predicted that Barbie would surpass the b billion mark at the box office when she first pitched the project. At the time, she thought her expectations may have been overly optimistic. “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was that studios thrive when they are bold enough to combine a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie explained. She cited examples like “dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg” as successful partnerships that have yielded significant financial returns, making the case for Barbie and Greta Gerwig to achieve similar success.
