It has been reported that Richard battled Parkinson’s disease in recent years. Ben mentioned during their last visit about a month ago that Richard was unable to communicate verbally, yet he maintained a positive spirit throughout their time together, reflecting his resilience even in challenging circumstances.
Perry embarked on his journey in the music industry after graduating from college in 1964, making the significant move from Michigan to Los Angeles. There, he produced the first few albums for the avant-garde rock legend Captain Beefheart, showcasing his early talent and vision in the music world.
Throughout the 1970s, Perry gained prominence by collaborating with legendary artists such as Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, and many others. His close partnership with Rod Stewart was particularly noteworthy, as Perry contributed significantly to three of Stewart’s acclaimed Great American Songbook albums, solidifying their artistic bond.
In 1978, Perry founded Planet Records, his own label, which he successfully managed until its acquisition by RCA Records in 1983, marking a significant milestone in his career as a music executive and producer.
