Nancy Wilson has disclosed the unexpected reasons behind her and sister Ann’s abrupt departure during a memorable Led Zeppelin concert. This intriguing incident occurred back in 1969 when Nancy and Ann were both budding musicians eager to make their mark in the music world. They attended the Seattle concert primarily to see the headlining act, the Fifth Dimension, unaware that Led Zeppelin would be opening for them. During a captivating discussion on the 100 Guitarists podcast, Nancy shared her thoughts on this eye-opening experience that left a lasting impression on them.

As Nancy vividly recounted, “Jimmy [Page] had his violin bow going, and he was doing his Echoplex magic – you know, pretending that he’s summoning the music out of the air with his Echoplex repeat.” At the same time, Led Zeppelin’s charismatic frontman, Robert Plant, had both young women blushing. “We were like, ‘Oh my God, the singer. He’s so suggestive.’ He’s got his shirt wide open, he’s got his bare chest, and his jeans were really low riders. He was moving in this way that was so super suggestive, and we were kind of shocked.”

As Nancy elaborated, the Wilson sisters were merely naïve teenagers at the time, having been sheltered from the sexually-charged atmosphere that Plant epitomized. “We were in a little folk band at the time,” Nancy remarked. “We were from the suburbs, right? So, we were kind of square little hippie chicks. [Led Zeppelin were] just being so suggestive and lewd, and then, he sang about ‘squeeze my lemon,’ and we’re like, ‘Oh! We must leave the premises!’ We were just shocked [and] actually walked on Led Zeppelin at the Green Lake Aqua Theatre.”

Although the initial encounter with Led Zeppelin was shocking for the Wilson sisters, they quickly transitioned into devoted admirers of the legendary English rock band. Nancy was particularly captivated by Page’s unique guitar sound, which resonated deeply with her musical sensibilities. “His acoustic playing just really caught my ear,” she shared in greater detail during the 100 Guitarists interview. “This was very English folk, like Celtic, Irish…earlier than American folk. Really draws from the old country sounds and stuff like hurdy-gurdies and all kinds of crazy modalities and all these really tasty things.”
