Hey, America: It’s Time to Consider Returning the Statue of Liberty to France. This provocative demand is being made by a vocal French politician who claims the United States no longer deserves the honor of hosting this iconic symbol. The Statue, a remarkable gift from France nearly 140 years ago, represents the enduring friendship between our nations, as noted by the Associated Press.

Unpacking the Controversy Surrounding Lady Liberty
Raphaël Glucksmann, a prominent member of the European Parliament and co-president of a left-leaning political party in France, recently made headlines with his bold statements about the Statue of Liberty. While he does not purport to speak for all French citizens, his remarks during a recent speech have sparked significant discussion online. Glucksmann accused some Americans of choosing to align themselves with “tyrants,” reflecting a growing concern in Europe over the implications of President Donald Trump’s foreign and domestic policies.
“Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” Glucksmann declared passionately to his supporters, who responded with applause and cheers. “It was our gift to you. But apparently, you despise her. So she will be happy here with us.”
In further remarks, Glucksmann criticized the Trump administration for its reported cuts to funding for research institutions. He stated emphatically, “If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to dismiss those who have propelled your country to become a global leader through their innovation and research, then we will gladly welcome them to France.” His comments underline a growing divide in perspectives between the two nations.
Understanding the Impossibility of France Taking Back the Statue of Liberty
So, can France really demand the return of the Statue of Liberty? The answer is a resounding no. According to UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural organization, this iconic monument is officially recognized as U.S. government property. The statue is listed among the World Heritage treasures, emphasizing its significance. Originally conceived as a monumental gesture of French-American friendship, it was intended to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
However, the political landscape shifted dramatically due to the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, which affected the monument’s funding and construction timeline. Ultimately, France took on the costs for the statue itself, while Americans funded its pedestal. After its journey across the Atlantic in 350 pieces, the statue was officially unveiled to the world on October 28, 1886, solidifying its place in history.
French Politician’s Views Are Not Representative of National Sentiment
It’s essential to note that Glucksmann’s views are not indicative of the broader sentiment in France. The French government, under President Emmanuel Macron, is not advocating for the Statue of Liberty to be returned. In fact, for Glucksmann to gain support from Macron’s administration, the diplomatic relationship between France and the U.S. would have to deteriorate significantly. Currently, Macron is attempting to navigate a delicate balance, collaborating with Trump while pushing back against certain policies, particularly concerning tariffs.
Macron has allowed his prime minister, François Bayrou, to express more critical opinions. Bayrou has openly criticized the “brutality” exhibited by Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to the White House. Furthermore, he has raised concerns that Trump’s administration risks benefiting Russia by halting military aid to Ukraine.

Nevertheless, Glucksmann’s party has taken an even stronger stance, accusing Trump of governing in an “authoritarian” manner and claiming he is “preparing to deliver Ukraine on a silver platter” to Russia. In his recent speech, Glucksmann invoked the words of New York poet Emma Lazarus, who famously described the statue as a “mighty woman with a torch” who offers refuge to the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
“Today, this land is ceasing to be what it was,” Glucksmann lamented.
