Dark Horse Comics has made the significant decision to officially cancel the comic adaptation of Anansi Boys, which is based on the renowned book by Neil Gaiman. This decision follows serious allegations of sexual abuse and harassment against the acclaimed author. The announcement was conveyed by series writer Marc Bernardin, who stated that the series has shipped its final issue and will not be published in a trade paperback format. This cancellation marks a pivotal moment in the comic book industry, reflecting the broader impact of the #MeToo movement on creative projects.
In his remarks, Bernardin expressed that while he feels immense pride in the work produced for the comic, he believes that “all of that pales” in comparison to the experiences endured by Gaiman’s victims, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing their well-being. Following the emergence of these allegations last year, Gaiman was removed from the production of Good Omens, a series available on Prime Video that is adapted from a novel he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett. Plans for a third season have been scaled down to a conclusive movie, which is set to premiere in 2025. Meanwhile, Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman remains unaffected at this time, with no major changes announced.
Recently, Anansi Boys #7 was released, marking the final issue in the series. Dark Horse has confirmed that there will be no trade paperback release. Bernardin shared his pride in the creative efforts behind the book, praising artist Shawn Martinbrough for his exceptional line work, colorist Chris Sotomayor for his extraordinary color palette, and David Mack for his outstanding cover art.
Despite the artistic achievements, he poignantly stated, “But all of that pales.”
The narrative of Anansi Boys revolves around the complex relationship between two brothers who are twins. One brother embodies meekness and timidity, akin to a flopsy, set-upon puppy, while the other is characterized by narcissism and hedonism, driven solely by his own quest for pleasure and sensation.
