Bachman-Turner Overdrive has proudly unveiled their latest single, titled “60 Years Ago,” marking the band’s first release of new music since the 1984 album BTO. This track serves as a heartfelt tribute to Winnipeg, the vibrant Canadian city where the iconic rock band originated in 1973. The song not only celebrates the band’s roots but also their enduring legacy in the music world.
Leading the band, Randy Bachman, who was previously a member of the legendary Guess Who, also hails from Winnipeg, a city rich in musical history dating back to the ’60s. The new song features original vocalist Fred Turner, along with guitarist Tal Bachman and drummer KoKo Bachman. Notably, it includes a captivating guitar solo by fellow Canadian rock legend Neil Young, adding a unique flair to the track.
In a recent press release announcing the track, Bachman expressed gratitude for the city that shaped their musical journey, stating, “As a thank-you to Winnipeg, the city that shaped us, I wrote a song called ’60 Years Ago.’ This song is our tribute to Winnipeg, the place where we grew up as teenagers in the ’60s, a time when the city’s music scene was exploding. It was the Liverpool of North America, a melting pot of incredible talents.”

Bachman further shared, “Everyone I’ve talked to who spent time in Winnipeg and witnessed that musical explosion is excited to hear this song, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.” The excitement surrounding this release is palpable, and fans are eager to embrace the new sound.

In a remarkable comeback, Bachman-Turner Overdrive resumed their musical journey with a tour last year, promising fans new music and the first BTO album of original material in over four decades. “We’re working on new BTO stuff, and it’s got to sound like 1976 and 1977,” Bachman shared in an interview with UCR’s Matt Wardlaw in 2024, hinting at the band’s dedication to their classic sound.
“It’s really easy – I saved all of my gear from the ’70s. I built a new home studio, and all of my ’70s rack mount gear, including all of my Neve and Trident modules, are right here. I’ve got the guitars and the amps. … It’s amazing. I’m having fun. It’s great,” Bachman enthused, illustrating his passion for music creation.
(Additionally, Bachman has recently discussed the possibility of a reunion tour with the Guess Who, scheduled for 2026, featuring singer Burton Cummings.)
The release of "60 Years Ago" signifies the first music under the band’s name since 1996’s Trial by Fire Greatest & Latest, which included revamped versions of some of BTO’s most beloved tracks recorded without Bachman. Furthermore, this new single doubles as a charitable effort, with proceeds benefiting the Bridge to Nowhere Charity Ride, a nonprofit cycling club dedicated to helping end chronic homelessness in Winnipeg, as stated on its website.
