Bassist of Avenged Sevenfold Celebrates 2024 Milestone Event
In the journey of any band, certain pivotal moments stand out, and for the first time in his career, Avenged Sevenfold’s Johnny Christ truly feels he has “made it” by achieving a significant professional milestone in 2024. This milestone is none other than headlining and completely selling out the prestigious Rock in Rio festival in Brazil, a dream that many musicians aspire to realize.
Celebrating Johnny Christ’s Remarkable Achievement in 2024
During an insightful discussion on his popular internet TV show, Drinks With Johnny, the bassist reflected on the year’s significant events as it draws to a close. He highlighted a particular moment he described as “the culmination of everything” for him and the band, underscoring the importance of this experience in shaping his career and personal aspirations.
“For me, the highlight of this year was undoubtedly the 40th anniversary of Rock In Rio in September, which was absolutely unbelievable. It was incredibly rewarding to reconnect with our Brazilian fans and to be an integral part of such a legendary festival,” Johnny expressed with enthusiasm.
He elaborated, “Throughout my career, I’ve often been asked when I felt I truly made it, but I never had a clear answer. There have been numerous significant moments, like ‘Bat Country’ debuting on TRL, or when ‘Unholy Confessions’ was featured on Headbangers Ball. Touring with Metallica was monumental, yet none of these experiences made me feel I had fulfilled my dream until we played at Rock In Rio. I’m being completely honest.”
The Deep Significance of Rock In Rio for Johnny Christ
For many aspiring musicians, certain milestones hold profound significance, shaping their dreams and aspirations. Johnny Christ reminisced, “Growing up, I was captivated by the live albums and performances from Rock In Rio featuring some of my all-time favorite bands, especially Iron Maiden, which is one of the most iconic acts to have graced that stage. Even before I became a musician, Rock In Rio was a name that resonated with me deeply.”
He added, “Years ago, we had the honor of being the main support for Iron Maiden at Rock In Rio. That experience blew my mind at just 23 or 24 years old; it felt monumental. Fast forward to now, headlining the festival for its 40th anniversary and selling out our date was a dream come true.”
Reflecting on an Unforgettable Performance at Rock in Rio 2024
Johnny Christ detailed why this particular performance was so meaningful to him, saying, “Everything fell into place perfectly for this event. It’s the festival’s 40-year anniversary, and I was celebrating my own milestone of turning 40 that year. Meeting the visionary who founded Rock In Rio back in 1984, just before I was born, was surreal. I had the chance to discuss the evolution of the festival and the various acts that have performed over the years. In the ’80s, they didn’t have the same regulations as today, allowing for crowds of up to nine million over the week, with 300,000 attending each day. Now, due to regulations, a sellout is capped at around 100,000, but we had around 125,000 people in attendance that day.”

The atmosphere was electric, and even though we celebrated afterward, it wasn’t until I returned home that I could fully appreciate what we had accomplished. Looking back, I can confidently say Rock In Rio was my career highlight.”
