Being Fat Isn’t My Only Problem: 99 Challenges I Face

Indeed, we are witnessing a significant curvy uprising, with a marked increase in body positivity and size acceptance that began gaining momentum in 2015. As we step into 2016, we are determined to elevate these discussions even further. While this progress is a fantastic achievement for the curvy community, it’s crucial to acknowledge that there remains a vast amount of work to be accomplished. I can’t speak for all my fellow plus-size women, but it frustrates me deeply that despite our growing numbers, we still don’t receive the love and respect we rightfully deserve. Just to clarify, I have 99 problems, but being fat certainly isn’t one of them!

You might think that since we represent the majority, we would be treated like it… BUT OH NO! It seems that democracy doesn’t apply when it comes to fat women. We continue to be undervalued and often overlooked in various aspects of society, from fashion to healthcare.

I can already hear the thoughts of many slim individuals (and even some plus-size individuals) wondering why I’m here once again advocating for fat women. When will we be satisfied? Yes, you are correct; I am here to voice the concerns of curvy women worldwide and to highlight how unwelcoming society still makes us feel.

Despite the advancements in the plus-size community, we continue to encounter numerous challenges that we find difficult to bear. It’s a reality that many may not fully understand, as they might see these issues as trivial, but they are significant to me and countless other curvy women.

Why do I assert that there is still much work to be done? Because I personally experience many of these fat girl problems daily. The challenges may appear minor to some, yet they are monumental to individuals like myself. We don’t expect a red carpet rolled out for us, but a little bit of accommodation would certainly be appreciated…

OR IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

I sincerely hope it’s not too much to ask, because we are not just asking; we are demanding! The year 2016 is the time for us to claim everything we desire, and we refuse to be hindered by societal constraints. So, it’s time to adjust your mindset or be left behind.

Addressing the Issue of Seating: Are We Not Worthy?

Some of you might wish we would simply, “have several seats,” and perhaps we would, if only we could find seats that accommodate us. If you intend to travel by plane, bus, or even visit your doctor, prepare yourself for discomfort. Why is that? The truth is, the seats are often too small. Who exactly are these seats designed for?

Haven’t you received the memo that more than half of society is now overweight? It’s time to recognize that we deserve better. Let’s be honest: we think it might be wise for you to take a seat, while we remain standing and wait for you to upgrade your seating arrangements.

Dining Out: Can We Please Have Suitable Seating?

When we go out to eat, can we not be confined to those cramped booths that squeeze us uncomfortably? Dear Applebee’s hostess, you must know by now that this arrangement is simply not going to work; can we please be escorted to a proper table?

Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated—thank you!

Experiencing Discomfort at Amusement Parks

Speaking of discomfort, I know many (not me) curvy women would love to visit a carnival or theme park and enjoy a few thrilling roller coasters. However, the reality is that the safety bar can be punishingly tight, and it makes the experience unnecessarily distressing.

To the Gentlemen: We Are More Than a Fetish

It’s important for you to understand that we are not your fetish! We are women, and we are not mere trophies for you to collect. If your interest doesn’t extend beyond a superficial level, please step aside, as we are not here to satisfy anyone’s sexual fantasies.

Addressing the Challenges of Dressing Rooms and Restrooms

Furthermore, it can be nearly impossible for us to navigate some of these dressing rooms and restroom stalls. We deserve enough space to move our arms freely, without feeling as though the walls are closing in on us. Honestly, there is no place like home; I would rather return an item or endure discomfort than to subject myself to such an embarrassing ordeal.

Retailers, It’s Time for Change!

Listen up, retailers! Please cut the games. If you choose not to cater to plus-size women, that’s acceptable. What we can’t tolerate is the false advertising of being plus-friendly while your clothing fit suggests otherwise. This is a blatant misrepresentation!

While I could go on and on about these issues, I’ll pause for now. Just know that we, as fat girls, demand results. We refuse to remain silent in 2016. If there are issues to address, we will do so unapologetically.

What are some challenges faced by curvy women that you are eager to leave behind in 2016? Share your thoughts, ladies!
