As we approach the exciting finale of our March Dadness tournament, it’s time to explore the iconic “Big” bands that have shaped dad rock across the generations: Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z. This genre has evolved significantly over the years, reflecting changing tastes and cultural influences.
Historically, the term “dad rock” was synonymous with the legendary classic rock bands from the 1960s and 1970s that your father cherished. However, with the passage of time, many of these dads have transitioned into grandfathers, and the definition of “dad rock” has expanded to include a wider array of music that resonates with current generations.
Last year, we delved into a fascinating study that examined the most beloved dad rock bands across each state, based on a survey of 3,000 Americans. It was a bittersweet moment to see bands like Nickelback, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Blink-182 listed, as it served as a poignant reminder that many of us have aged more than we’d like to admit.
This realization highlighted the fact that various generations perceive different eras of rock music as “dad rock“. To capture this diversity, we compiled a list of the Big 4 bands that represent each generation’s unique flavor of dad rock.
