During promotional activities for Gladiator II, Denzel Washington inadvertently disclosed that Ryan Coogler is penning a role for him in the highly anticipated Black Panther 3. Although no formal agreements are in place yet, Coogler expressed his enthusiasm on the Nightcap podcast, stating his strong desire to work with the veteran actor. This collaboration could potentially elevate the film, given Washington’s extensive experience and the emotional depth he brings to his characters.
Coogler passionately remarked, “I’ve been dying to work with Denzel,” indicating his eagerness to make this partnership a reality. He further emphasized, “I’m hoping we can make that happen. I’ve got every intention of working with him on that movie. As long as he’s interested, man, it’s going to happen. He’s a living legend and a great mentor for so many of us. He’s all about looking out for us, now.” Such statements reflect not just admiration but also the collaborative spirit that defines modern filmmaking.
After the news about Black Panther 3 slipped from Washington’s lips, he realized he might have jumped the gun and promptly reached out to Coogler to express his apologies. “I called him the other day. I forgot what it was about — no, I called him to apologize,” Washington recounted. “That’s right. I called him. I said, ‘I’m sorry, man.’ He’s like, ‘No, man, it’s all good.’ I FaceTimed, and right there next to him was his lady. They were editing. In light of Washington’s potential involvement, Black Panther producer Nate Moore shared his aspirations for the actor’s participation in the film. “If that manifests, which we’re gonna try, I think it will probably be somebody from canon. Who that is, is early days,” Moore explained last month. “We honestly haven’t had really substantive creative conversations with Ryan, mostly because he’s finishing his film Sinners, which is gonna come out this year and is gonna be great. So again it’s too early to say, but obviously if an actor of the caliber of Denzel Washington wants in, we’re gonna figure out a way to make that happen.” This indicates a commitment to maintaining the high standards associated with the franchise while embracing new talent.
