Could the iconic band Boston embark on a tour without any of its original members, following the examples set by rock legends Foreigner and Lynyrd Skynyrd? This question looms large as guitarist Tom Scholz, the band’s primary songwriter and the creative force behind Boston’s signature sound, stands as the last remaining founder. At 77 years old, Scholz is actively involved in charity work and continues to write music, yet there are limited indications that he has any desire to return to the stage for live performances. The prospect of a Boston tour raises both excitement and uncertainty among fans.
Boston has not graced the concert stage since 2017, and there is surely a strong demand among fans eager to experience the band live once more. However, lead singer Tommy DeCarlo has expressed skepticism about the viability of touring without Scholz, emphasizing the essential role he plays in the band’s identity.
Why Tom Scholz Is Essential to the Boston Experience
“From a fan’s perspective, I believe it wouldn’t feel authentic,” DeCarlo shared during his appearance on the Jeremy White Show podcast. “Attending a Boston concert without Tom would feel incomplete because, in my view, Boston is synonymous with Tom.” His sentiments highlight the deep connection fans have with Scholz as the driving force behind the band’s music and legacy.

While DeCarlo holds respect for other bands that have continued to thrive despite not having any original members, he firmly believes that Boston would lose its essence without Scholz. “Even if the music resonates, the live experience simply wouldn’t be the same without Tom performing on stage,” he elaborated. “If Tom decided to retire and someone else took over, I’m not sure it would carry the same significance. It just wouldn’t feel special.”
Embracing the Legacy of Brad Delp: A Unique Perspective from DeCarlo
DeCarlo’s perspective is particularly noteworthy, given that he joined Boston in 2007 after the tragic passing of original lead singer Brad Delp. He was chosen to step into the frontman role after years of being a passionate fan. During his conversation with White, DeCarlo revealed that he intentionally shaped his vocal style to honor Delp’s distinctive sound. “I aspire to reach the level of excellence that Brad exhibited, but I recognize that I can never replicate it,” he confessed. “Nonetheless, I strive to deliver each song as faithfully as possible to the original recordings.”

DeCarlo acknowledged the challenges of dealing with online criticism from those who question his place in the band. “I’ve learned not to let negative comments affect me,” he remarked. “No one needs to remind me that I’m not Brad Delp. I genuinely believe that if Brad were still here today, he would be the first to support me, saying, ‘This guy is doing a fantastic job, and I’m proud of Tommy DeCarlo.’”
