Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World.
While Captain America: Brave New World primarily focuses on the transformation of Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) into the new Star-Spangled Avenger, one of the film?s most unexpected elements is the impactful cameo from Bucky Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, an Academy Award nominee. His brief yet significant presence adds depth ahead of his upcoming lead role in May’s Thunderbolts*. Director Julius Onah confirmed that Bucky’s involvement was a planned aspect of the film, although the specifics of his role evolved during the creative process.
?Bucky was always a part of it,? Onah shared with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, clarifying that Mackie’s previous comments about Bucky’s role were misleading. ?Sam has many important relationships, and from the outset, we recognized that Bucky would play a crucial part in the narrative.? Although some fans anticipated a more extensive role for Bucky, Onah emphasized that his limited screen time was a strategic choice aimed at enhancing the emotional weight of his appearance. He elaborated:
?There were versions where he appeared at the beginning of the film, and others where he showed up at the very end. However, it became obvious that introducing him during a moment when Sam is grappling with significant emotional turmoil would be incredibly impactful and also deliver an unexpected twist. The audience likely won’t foresee that this is when he makes his entrance, which I find delightful.?
The Exceptional Bond Between Sam and Bucky is Highlighted in Their Reunion
This pivotal scene not only underscores the profound connection between Sam and Bucky but also serves as a reminder of their dynamic, which was a central theme in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Onah disclosed that the interplay of serious and comedic elements in their interaction was meticulously designed to resonate with viewers.
?It was scripted, and for me, any great scene requires the actors to infuse their unique essence into it,? Onah explained. ?Initially, we film the scripted version and then I encourage the actors to explore and enjoy the moment. The scene’s structure and several lines are indeed scripted, but I encourage them to inject a bit of playfulness or spontaneity. This approach yields the most genuine and organic outcome.?
