Tragic news has emerged from the sports broadcasting community today.

The renowned broadcasting icon, Greg Gumbel, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

The announcement of Gumbel’s death was made public through a heartfelt statement from his wife, Marcy Gumbel, and his daughter, Michelle Gumbel.

Understanding the Circumstances Surrounding Greg Gumbel’s Death

Today, the family disclosed the unfortunate news that Gumbel passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer.

“He passed away peacefully, surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer,” the family statement reads. “Greg faced his illness with the same stoicism, grace, and positivity that characterized his life.”

“He leaves behind a remarkable legacy filled with love, inspiration, and an unwavering dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; his iconic voice and presence will forever resonate in our hearts,” the Gumbels expressed to CBS Sports.

The first public indication of Gumbel’s health struggles came in March when he unfortunately missed his first NCAA tournament since 1997.

He later attributed his absence to “family health issues,” a statement that hinted at the challenges he was facing behind the scenes.

Celebrating the Groundbreaking Career of Greg Gumbel

Throughout his illustrious 50-year career, Gumbel shattered barriers and became a household name synonymous with some of the most significant moments in sports history.

In 2001, Gumbel made history by becoming the first Black broadcaster to provide play-by-play commentary for a major US sports championship, announcing Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, a milestone that paved the way for future generations.

David Berson, the president and CEO of CBS Sports, expressed his admiration today in an official statement released to ESPN.

“A phenomenal broadcaster and a talented storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking careers in sports broadcasting history,” said Berson, highlighting Gumbel’s impact on the industry.

Greg Gumbel is survived by his loving wife and daughter, along with several siblings, including his brother, fellow broadcaster Bryant Gumbel.
