COMPELLING PLOT SYNOPSIS: The narrative centers around a young woman who finds herself under the spell of a horrifying vampire, whose obsessive desire drives him to pursue her relentlessly, showcasing a chilling battle between love and fear.

CRITICAL REVIEW OF NOSFERATU: I have consistently emphasized that Robert Eggers is among the most innovative and thrilling directors of our time. His previous works, including The Witch and The Lighthouse, have already made an indelible mark on the genre, but with The Northman, he reached new heights. This film represents his most ambitious endeavor, seamlessly integrating his unique aesthetic into a broader narrative that appeals to a wide audience without sacrificing artistic integrity. The underwhelming box office performance of The Northman is disheartening; however, with Nosferatu, Eggers is poised to achieve significant commercial success and attract an even larger viewership.

As the holiday season approaches, it is evident that Nosferatu will be unlike any other film in theaters, especially given its hard-R rating. This film has emerged as the most frightening vampire tale in years. For those unfamiliar with the backstory, Nosferatu originally refers to the 1922 silent German expressionist horror film by F.W. Murnau, which served as an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Echoing Murnau’s foundational work, Eggers, who also penned the screenplay, adheres to the core premise of Stoker’s Dracula. In this iteration, Bill Skarsgard portrays Count Orlok, whose obsessive fixation on Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen Hutter (a modern counterpart to Mina Harker) drives the plot forward. While familiar narrative elements are preserved, the film diverges by presenting itself not merely as a gothic romance but as a psychological horror, showcasing Depp’s stunning portrayal of an increasingly disturbed Ellen. Her performance is truly a standout, revealing the depths of her character’s torment.

Within the storyline, the connection between Orlok and Ellen transcends mere attraction, developing into a disturbing psychic bond. Initially, Ellen appears to be a willing participant in Orlok’s dark desires, but she quickly recoils in horror during the film’s prologue as she confronts the true nature of his malevolence. Eggers has ingeniously crafted a vampire that defies conventional portrayals. Skarsgard’s depiction of Orlok remains shrouded in mystery, presenting a visually arresting interpretation of the undead that is refreshingly original.

Nosferatu review

Skarsgard’s portrayal of Orlok, accentuated by his deep, haunting Transylvanian accent and imposing physicality, creates a genuinely terrifying character. However, it’s important to acknowledge that Depp’s performance is equally compelling, especially in scenes where she enters a trance-like state, suggesting a depth of horror that may merit award recognition. Supporting them is Nicholas Hoult, who plays her husband Thomas, a character akin to Jonathan Harker. While some commentators highlight Thomas’s comparatively passive role in Nosferatu relative to Dracula, he emerges as a more fleshed-out character, driven by genuine love for Ellen and a fierce determination to confront Orlok.

Willem Dafoe, a frequent collaborator with Eggers, delivers a remarkable performance as the Van Helsing-like figure, Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz. His portrayal adds a thrilling layer of unpredictability to the film’s second half, depicting a character that veers dramatically from the traditional heroic vampire hunter. Ralph Ineson, known for his work in The Witch, serves as a fitting counterpart as the more rational, science-oriented pupil, while Simon McBurney offers a fierce performance as the film’s version of Renfield, Herr Knock.

A standout aspect of Eggers’s Nosferatu is its emotional resonance alongside its terrifying horror. Emma Corrin delivers a heartbreaking performance as Anna, one of Orlok’s tragic victims. Even Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who initially presents as a satire of the wealthy elite, evolves into a character imbued with genuine pathos as the story progresses, demonstrating Eggers’s skill in fully developing each character’s narrative arc.

Aesthetically, this film represents the pinnacle of vampire cinema since Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula three decades ago. Utilizing a 1:66:1 aspect ratio, Nosferatu promises to be a visual spectacle, particularly for those fortunate enough to experience it on an IMAX screen. The sound design and score, crafted by Robin Carolan, enhance the film’s haunting atmosphere. Indeed, this is one of the most meticulously produced horror films in recent memory. Eggers has poured his passion into creating what may be the definitive adaptation of this timeless tale. In my opinion, this film ranks among the finest of the year and stands as the sole recent horror film capable of evoking a genuine chill. Out of all the films I have seen this year, Nosferatu holds the strongest potential to become a cinematic classic.
