Critics Choice Awards Postponed Amid Wildfires
The Critics Choice Awards have faced postponements in the past, yet the ongoing crisis in Los Angeles has led to another delay for this prestigious event. The safety of attendees and the community remains a top priority as the situation continues to evolve.
The wildfires in Southern California have created a dire situation, causing numerous events to be postponed or canceled this year to ensure public safety. For the entertainment industry, this particularly affects the annual awards show circuit, which has become a staple of the season. Major award events, including the announcements for the Academy Awards, have already undergone rescheduling. This morning, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Critics Choice Awards, initially postponed from January 14 to January 26, are now delayed once again due to the persisting emergency conditions that have yet to improve.
Originally scheduled to take place in Santa Monica, the Critics Choice Awards event organized by the Critics Choice Association is still awaiting a new date announcement. Notably, our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, is a voting member of this prestigious association. In a statement released last week, CEO Joey Berlin expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This unfolding tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community. All our thoughts and prayers are with those battling the devastating fires and with all who have been affected.” According to THR, “The event was set to be held at Barker Hangar, which is located just a few miles from the Pacific Palisades where thousands have been evacuated and many homes destroyed, along with a separate fire that is ravaging the Pasadena-Altadena area.”
In addition to the postponement of the awards shows, several movie premieres in Hollywood have also been canceled due to the ongoing crisis. This includes significant titles like Wolf Man and Unstoppable, which were scheduled for last Tuesday, and films such as Better Man, The Pitt, and On Call that were set to premiere on Wednesday. Additionally, The Last Showgirl was also impacted and canceled on Thursday. The Screen Actors Guild took the decision to cancel their live nominations announcement last week, opting instead to share the news on their official website. They included a message urging people to help, stating, “We want to take a moment to acknowledge the devastating fires affecting Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted — the residents, first responders, and all those working tirelessly to protect the community. Please consider donating to a charity of your choice to help those in need. To support impacted members of our artist community, donations can be made to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which operates a natural disaster relief fund. Donate HERE.”
