Den of Thieves 2 Marks Lionsgate’s First Number 1 in a Year

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera marks a significant milestone for Lionsgate as it achieves the studio’s largest box office opening in over a year, while the anticipated biopic Better Man struggles to find its footing and is performing poorly.

Lionsgate has had a challenging year filled with significant box office disappointments, particularly with high-budget flops such as Borderlands and The Crow. However, this weekend is proving to be a turning point for the studio, as Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is projected to dominate the box office with an estimated opening of $15 million—surpassing initial predictions by about $3 million. This impressive opening aligns with the performance of the original film released in 2018 and represents a notable improvement over Gerard Butler’s recent action films, Plane and Kandahar. It is believed that the tragic Los Angeles wildfires impacted the film’s potential opening, yet the $15 million figure indicates a solid start for a movie poised for a successful run on streaming platforms.

As reported by Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King is expected to secure a distant second place with earnings exceeding $11 million, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is projected to take third place with just over $8 million. Nosferatu follows in fourth with an estimated $6.3 million, contributing to a remarkable total of $81 million, while Moana 2 trails closely behind with projected earnings of $5.9 million. These figures highlight the competitive landscape of this weekend’s box office, showcasing how audience preferences are shaping the success of various films.

In stark contrast, the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man is facing a catastrophic reception, with projections indicating it may only earn $1 million despite being shown on over 1,200 screens. This dismal performance stands in stark comparison to The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbett, which is expected to earn the same amount from merely 68 screens. Furthermore, The Last Showgirl, featuring Pamela Anderson, is projected to bring in approximately $1.35 million from less than half the number of screens. Such figures are distressing for a film that was anticipated to resonate strongly, especially considering Robbie Williams’s status as a household name in the UK. With a production budget exceeding $100 million, this film is set to be one of the pricier flops of the year, despite its redeeming qualities. The disparity in appeal compared to iconic figures like Bob Dylan, Elton John, Queen, or Elvis might have contributed to its downfall. Additionally, the creative choice of featuring a CGI monkey to portray Williams could have been an overly ambitious move by director Michael Gracey, although there is a possibility that this film may gain a cult following in the future.
