The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, digital release

Digital Release of War of the Rohirrim Announced

The highly anticipated animated feature, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is set to become available for digital purchase starting on December 27th, just two weeks following its theatrical debut. This swift transition to digital platforms is indicative of the film’s underwhelming performance at the box office, which, while disappointing, allows fans of the LOTR franchise to access the film sooner rather than later.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, digital release

The animated epic, The War of the Rohirrim, will be accessible on various digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, among others. While the film remains in theaters, its competition is quite fierce, featuring blockbusters like Wicked: Part One, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Given this intense rivalry, it’s likely that the number of available screens for The War of the Rohirrim will dwindle quickly. To date, the film has generated approximately $15.4 million against a production budget of $30 million, indicating a challenging road ahead for the animated feature.

The digital release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim promises to include several engaging special features that will enrich the viewing experience. These features include:

  • Return to Helm’s Deep: History Becomes Legend
  • Middle-earth and Anime: A Marriage of Creativity
  • Héra: A New Hero for Middle-earth

The official synopsis for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim reads: “Set 183 years prior to the events of the original film trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” chronicles the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the illustrious King of Rohan. A surprise assault led by Wulf, a cunning and vengeful Dunlending lord, forces Helm and his people to make a valiant last stand within the ancient stronghold of Hornburg—a formidable fortress that will later be known as Helm’s Deep. In this dire situation, Héra, Helm’s daughter, must find the courage to lead the resistance against an enemy determined to annihilate them.

The voice cast features notable actors, with Brian Cox from Succession taking on the role of Helm Hammerhand, the formidable King of Rohan. Gaia Wise, known for her performance in A Walk in the Woods, voices his daughter Héra, while Luke Pasqualino, recognized from Snowpiercer, portrays the antagonist Wulf. Additionally, Miranda Otto reprises her iconic role as Éowyn, the courageous Shieldmaiden of Rohan, who serves as the narrator of this tale. The film also features archival recordings of Christopher Lee as Saruman. Although The War of the Rohirrim has received a mixed bag of reviews, our own Steve Seigh praised it, stating that the film “reinvigorated my love for the LOTR franchise.” For a deeper dive, check out his full review right here.
